Registered EVs up 53% year-on-year, while hybrid vehicles near 900,000 as both segments post rapid growth
The number of electric cars registered in Turkey climbed 53.2% year-on-year to reach 472,157 by August, according to recent figures from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), as the country’s total car fleet reached 18,037,907 vehicles.
Electric vehicle numbers have grown sharply in recent years, driven by lower carbon emissions, greater energy efficiency, and quieter operation compared with conventional fuel types, alongside the expansion of charging infrastructure. Officials also pointed to the growing market share of Togg, Turkey’s domestically produced car brand, the launch of new models, and a broader shift in consumer preferences as key drivers behind the increase.
Registered electric cars numbered just 565 in 2015, before rising to 183,776 by the end of 2024 and 370,591 in 2025. The total climbed further from 308,217 in August 2025 to 472,157 by August 2026, an increase of 53.2%. Electric cars now account for 2.62% of Turkey’s total registered car fleet.
Hybrid vehicles have followed a similar trajectory, having first appeared in registration data in 2011 with just 23 vehicles. Numbers rose to 13,877 by 2019, reaching 222,328 by the end of 2023, 391,296 in 2024 and 697,027 in 2025. By August 2026, the hybrid fleet had grown further to 896,270 vehicles, raising their share of the total car fleet from 4% in 2025 to 4.97%.
