A defining theme of the 21st century: the Jets lose to the Patriots. This happened again Sunday, with Gang Green falling 26-19 to their bitter rival.
Even though the team fought hard, missed opportunities on third- and fourth-down–combining for 3-of-12– and poor coaching decisions ultimately led to New York dropping to a frustrating 2-4 record.
Despite the disappointing loss, there were some positives, including rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. After missing the last four games on injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain, the former Indiana Hoosier reminded fans why the Jets traded back into the first round to select him.
Cooper led the team in receptions (6) and receiving yards (103), while also scoring New York’s lone touchdown in the third quarter (h/t NFL). With his performance against the Patriots, he became the fourth Jets rookie to record a 100-yard receiving game in franchise history, joining Kenyon Sadiq, Al Toon and Garrett Wilson on the list.

To keep its playoff hopes alive, it's safe to say the Jets must continue to utilize Cooper as much as possible moving forward.
Omar Cooper Jr. could have what it takes to unlock Jets' offense
The Jets' underwhelming start can be attributed to the offense struggling mightily this season. Under offensive coordinator Frank Reich, the unit ranked 27th in points scored (18.6) and total yards per game (284) entering Week 6.
While Reich’s playcalling has drawn criticism, we can’t place all the blame on him. Injuries to the receiving corps have derailed the unit, with several key playmakers missing time. This has held the offense back, as it ranked 23rd in passing yards per game (190). Additionally, New York hasn’t gotten consistent production from its receivers outside of Wilson.
Entering Week 6, Wilson led the team in receptions (31), receiving yards (374), and touchdowns (3). Behind him are Kenyon Sadiq and Isaiah Williams, who combined for 25 receptions for 297 yards and two touchdowns.
Those numbers go to show that the offense relies heavily on Wilson to create separation and move the ball downfield. But with Cooper back, Gang Green hopes he takes pressure off Wilson and helps the offense move the ball downfield with his speed and playmaking ability.
The rookie playmaker did exactly that against New England, hauling in a 48-yard touchdown and leading the team in yards after the catch with 25, per Pro Football Focus.
Cooper's ability to generate yards after the catch could also make Geno Smith's life easier. Because the receivers struggle to get open and Smith doesn’t want to throw the ball into harm’s way, he’s held onto the ball too long at times. At times, Smith has held onto the ball too long, partly because the receivers have struggled to create separation.
Rather than depending on Wilson every play, the 14-year veteran can turn to Cooper, who ran a 4.42-second 40-yard dash at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. With him back in the fold, Cooper gives Smith an intermediate option to get the ball out quickly and a deep-threat target.
It also gives opposing defenses another playmaker to account for. The 22-year-old helped open the passing game against the Patriots, as Smith threw for 252 passing yards—the second-most this season.
Of course, Cooper alone won’t solve the Jets’ offensive problems. However, if the rookie can build on his strong return, he can become a consistent contributor alongside Wilson and make New York’s passing game more dangerous.
Cooper's first opportunity to build on his big day will come in Week 7 against the Dolphins, who are allowing the sixth-most yards per completion (7.8) while being tied for the seventh-most passing TDs allowed (11) this season.
