KUALA LUMPUR: The 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin on Oct 27, bringing three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain between November and January that could trigger floods in low-lying areas and riverine communities.
Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the monsoon would last until March next year and be characterised by persistent northeast winds.
He said strong winds could also cause rough seas and raise sea levels, particularly in the South China Sea.
Rainfall is expected to ease during the final phase, from January to March, particularly in the northern peninsula and Sabah.
"This condition will result in hot and dry weather and could lead to more extreme heatwaves due to the influence of the very strong (Super) El Niño phenomenon currently occurring," he said in a statement today.
Hisham advised the public to remain vigilant and monitor weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia throughout the monsoon.
