The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa has informed the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and other Technical Education that about 250,000 Nigerians were currently undergoing the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.
It was a Federal Government’s scheme designed to help citizens acquire skills in different vocations, which the Minister added was ongoing in 1,200 centers across the country.
However, the House Committee under the leadership of Fuad Kayode Laguda has called for stronger engagement with the Federal Ministry of Education, to enhance legislative oversight of its activities.
The committee made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with the Minister, after months of unanswered correspondences by the ministry, prompting the committee to summon the minister in July, and August with a directive to provide the requested information on the TVET.
Chairman of the committee said, “we wrote six different correspondences on the same subject matter, requesting status reports on TVET’s activities and programmes. We did not get any response from your ministry.”
Responding, Alausa apologised to the committee, explaining that he had not personally received the correspondences. “I would have to profusely apologise, and let you know that I did not get any of the correspondences that you sent,” he said.
After a brief closed door meeting with the minister and his team, the committee chairman, Laguda told journalists that “Our meeting was progressive and purposeful. We are satisfied and, like I said, we will be moving forward and having better engagements.”
