The plant, identified as Ardisia colorata, has been rediscovered after more than two centuries, marking an important development in the study of the region’s rich plant diversity.
In another major finding, researchers have identified two new fish species, Gitchak nakana and Rakthamichthys anchi, in deep wells in Goalpara district.
In an X post, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the rediscovery of Ardisia colorata after 204 years and the discovery of two new fish species, underscoring Assam’s rich biodiversity and the importance of conserving its natural habitats.

The findings also underline the importance of protecting the state’s natural wealth, including its forests, aquatic ecosystems and other habitats that support a wide range of plant and animal life.
Conservation of these ecosystems remains crucial to safeguarding rare and newly identified species from habitat degradation and other environmental pressures.
These discoveries have brought renewed attention to Assam’s ecological richness and reinforced the need for sustained research and conservation efforts to preserve its unique biodiversity for future generations.
