Nigeria’s drug agency says it arrested a 34-year-old South African woman at Lagos airport on Wednesday 7 October 2026 with 36.65 kg of cocaine in her travel bags. A second arrest followed a week later, and reports of her account mention a group member based in the United States.
The case matters to US readers because Lagos is a major West African air hub with nonstop flights to the United States. A separate arrest listed in the same statement involved a woman carrying cannabis in checked baggage from Houston.

What We Know
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced the arrests in a statement by spokesperson Femi Babafemi, which Nigerian media reported on 25 October 2026. Officers detained Qhina Beauty on Wednesday 7 October 2026 in the departure hall of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.
She was preparing to board a Qatar Airways flight to South Africa via Doha. A search of her two travel bags found 30 blocks of cocaine weighing 36.65 kg.
The blocks were wrapped in cellophane and tape and packed in seven parcels. According to the NDLEA, the parcels were mixed with dried pepper.
According to the NDLEA, she told investigators that she arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday 30 September to collect the consignment. She said another South African woman recruited her and promised her 20,000 rand (about US$1,200 at 16.58 rand per dollar, RT, 25 October 2026) after a successful delivery.
The agency then turned to the local end of the chain. Uchenna Umunnakwe, a Lagos car dealer, was arrested on Wednesday 14 October 2026 at Apple Junction on Ago Palace Way in Lagos, after surveillance at his residence in Shasha.
The NDLEA says he admitted receiving her at the airport and arranging her accommodation at Santiago Hotel in Amuwo-Odofin. He later moved her to Cynarisso Hotel near the airport, according to the agency.
Reports of her account say the group she was introduced to includes a member based in the United States, who has not been named. The NDLEA chairman commended the officers involved.
The same statement reported that a 62-year-old Nigerian-American woman was arrested on Wednesday 21 October 2026 at Lagos airport with 9.45 kg of cannabis in checked baggage from Houston. No link between that case and the cocaine inquiry has been reported.
In plain English
The NDLEA is Nigeria’s national agency for enforcing drug laws. It investigates trafficking and makes arrests at airports, seaports and other sites, and its statements remain its own account until a court rules.
What Is Not Known
The NDLEA statement, as reported, does not give the charges, a court date or the court that will hear the case. Both people named are suspects, and no conviction has been reported.
The identity of the woman who allegedly recruited Beauty is not public, and neither is the name of the reported US-based group member. The street value of the cocaine was not reported, and we do not estimate it.
The account of her trip and the promised payment comes from what she told investigators, as relayed by the agency. It has not been tested in court.
What It Means for Travelers and US Readers
Nigerian airports screen departing bags, and this case shows that searches in the departure hall can uncover concealed drugs. Lagos airport is a regular site of NDLEA interceptions.
Carrying drugs across borders risks long prison sentences in many countries, whatever a traveller says about who packed the bags. Anyone asked to carry a parcel for someone they barely know should understand that the carrier carries the legal risk.
For US readers, the Houston flight in the second case and the reported US-based group member show that the inquiry touches the United States. Neither detail suggests wrongdoing by other travellers on that route.
The case is at an early stage, and no court outcome has been reported. The Rio Times follows developments in our Nigeria coverage and across Africa.
