Overview
The selloff that began late on October 8 and ran into the early hours of October 9 wiped out roughly $1.19 billion of leveraged crypto positions in 24 hours. According to CoinDesk’s account of the flush, Ethereum positions accounted for about $356 million against Bitcoin‘s $298 million, even though Ether’s market value is less than a fifth of Bitcoin’s. Adjusted for market capitalization, roughly $1.2 million was liquidated per $1 billion of Ether’s market value, against about $180,000 for Bitcoin, a gap of about six times.
The number worth dissecting is that multiple, not the headline total. One macro shock, one time window, two assets, and a sixfold difference in damage means the story is not about how far prices fell. It is about where leverage had accumulated. For anyone holding a position, this dataset answers a more practical question than why the market dropped: whether their own exposure would become part of the forced selling the next time a move of this size arrives.
Key Takeaways
Longs absorbed nearly all of it. Coinglass data puts the total at $1.191 billion, of which $1.056 billion was long liquidations against just $135 million of shorts, across 192,576 traders.
Ether’s relative damage ran about six times Bitcoin’s. That is on a market-cap-adjusted basis. In absolute dollars the gap was only about $58 million.
Other majors were caught in the same sweep. Solana positions accounted for roughly $71 million, XRP about $34 million, NEAR about $25 million, and all remaining tokens around $119 million combined.
The single largest liquidation happened on-chain. It was a $19.98 million position in the ETH-USD market on Hyperliquid.
The trigger came from outside crypto. Fed minutes showed most officials expect another hike before year-end, while a report that the White House had asked the Pentagon for strike options against Iran pushed oil higher.
Liquidation volume is not the same as investor losses. This is the most common misreading of a number like $1.19 billion, and the distinction is set out below.
The Shape of the Flush
A One-Sided Clearing of Longs
Breaking the total apart says more than the total itself. Of the $1.191 billion, longs accounted for $1.056 billion and shorts for only $135 million, a ratio approaching eight to one. At the asset level, Bitcoin saw $273 million of long liquidations against $31.5 million of shorts, while Ether saw $294 million of longs against $56.5 million of shorts.
Such a lopsided distribution means leverage was positioned almost entirely for upside before the drop. CoinDesk notes that Bitcoin had been ranging between $83,000 and $87,000 while traders built exposure, so the break of that floor pushed a large cluster of positions through their liquidation prices at roughly the same time.
The mirror image appeared on the same day. After sliding from about $83,200 to as low as roughly $80,400 late Thursday, Bitcoin recovered to about $82,200 once President Trump said the United States would not strike Iran before the midterms. Around $25 million was liquidated over the following four hours, roughly 78% of it shorts, and in the final hour shorts made up nearly $12 million of about $13 million. Opposite direction, identical mechanism.
The Sixfold Gap After Adjusting for Size
Comparing raw dollars understates how unusual this was. Ether’s $356 million against Bitcoin’s $298 million looks like a gap of about 20%. But Ether’s market value is less than a fifth of Bitcoin’s, and once scale is removed, CoinDesk’s calculation gives roughly $1.2 million of liquidations per $1 billion of Ether market value against about $180,000 for Bitcoin.
That multiple carries the real information. It says leverage density on Ether is materially higher, so an identical percentage move forces far more positions to close. Price action confirms the pattern: Ether fell more than 3% to about $2,490 during the event, and across the full week The Rio Times recorded closing levels of $82,123 for Bitcoin, down 2.81%, against $2,488 for Ether, down 6.77%.
How Liquidation Actually Works
Maintenance Margin and the Liquidation Price
Leverage means posting a margin deposit to control a larger position. Every venue sets a maintenance margin, the minimum equity required to keep that position open. When adverse price movement pushes account equity below that threshold, the system does not wait for the trader to add funds. It closes the position at market, and the price at which that happens is the liquidation price.
That price is not mysterious. It follows from entry price, leverage and the maintenance margin requirement. Higher leverage means thinner equity relative to position size, so a smaller move breaches the line. At ten times leverage, roughly a 10% adverse move is enough to exhaust initial margin, and the actual trigger arrives earlier once maintenance requirements are counted. At twenty times, that cushion compresses to around 5%. In a market where intraday ranges of 3% are routine, the narrowness speaks for itself.
Long Liquidations Versus Short Liquidations
Long liquidations occur as prices fall and force selling. Short liquidations occur as prices rise and force buying. What they share is that the resulting trade moves in the same direction as the price, which amplifies the existing move rather than cushioning it.
This is why the long and short split matters more than the total. The $1.056 billion of long liquidations represents a billion dollars of passive selling that entered a falling market for reasons unrelated to anyone’s view, driven purely by margin rules. It also explains why technical levels carry outsized weight in a leveraged market, a dynamic covered in our framework for identifying Bitcoin support and resistance levels.
Where Ether’s Fragility Comes From
Positioning and Leverage Density
Ether’s derivatives market entered the shock already stretched. Crypto Briefing reported on October 8 that aggregate Ether contract open interest fell 7.53% in a single session to about $31.8 billion, equivalent to roughly 12.49 million ETH, with funding rates turning negative on some venues, meaning shorts were paying to hold. Coinglass’s ETH futures dashboard currently shows open interest near $31.9 billion, which is where any rebuild will become visible.
Open interest on its own is neither bullish nor bearish. It measures how many contracts remain unsettled. The signal comes from how it moves relative to price, and from what funding rates say about the cost of holding each side, a pairing we unpack in the guide to funding rates and open interest.
The Volatility Multiplier
Ether’s realized volatility has run structurally above Bitcoin’s for years, which means that at identical leverage an Ether position has a higher probability of touching its liquidation price. Traders applying the same multiple to both assets are not taking equivalent risk. In practice the imbalance widens further, because Ether is often treated as the higher-beta expression of the same view, which invites more leverage rather than less. Stack those two effects and a sixfold difference in market-cap-adjusted damage stops looking surprising.
Capital composition does the rest. A meaningful share of Bitcoin exposure now sits in spot ETFs and long-horizon allocations that use no leverage and cannot be force-sold, which dilutes Bitcoin’s liquidation density in the statistics. How these different capital types shape price behavior is covered in our breakdown of what truly drives Bitcoin’s price.
How a Cascade Builds
From One Forced Exit to Passive Supply
The mechanism is simple enough. Falling prices trigger a first wave of liquidations, the system sells at market, that selling pushes prices lower, the next cluster of liquidation prices is reached, and more forced supply arrives. When liquidity is deep, buyers absorb it. In thin overnight books or fragile sentiment, the same selling produces a larger price impact and the loop accelerates.
The $19.98 million ETH-USD liquidation on Hyperliquid was the single largest link in that chain. Because onchain perpetuals expose positions and liquidations publicly, events of this size are watched in real time, which feeds back into sentiment itself.
This Trigger, and Last Year’s Benchmark
The impulse originated outside crypto. The minutes of the September 15-16 FOMC meeting, released on October 7, state that most participants assessed that another increase in the target range would likely be appropriate. In the same window, CoinDesk reported that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare strike options against Iran, lifting Brent 2% above $102 while the ten-year Treasury yield reached 5.31%, near its highest since 2002. Two macro pressures landed simultaneously on a heavily leveraged market.
Scale deserves historical context. This flush arrived one day before the anniversary of October 10, 2025, when a record of roughly $19 billion was liquidated in a single day, about sixteen times Thursday’s figure. By that standard $1.19 billion is an ordinary deleveraging rather than a crisis, which fits the broader pattern described in our study of how far Bitcoin falls inside up-cycles.
How Traders Monitor This Risk
Three Observable Gauges
Funding rates show what each side pays to hold exposure. A rate that stays firmly positive for an extended stretch means long positioning is crowded and the market is paying a premium for upside, the condition under which pullbacks produce dense liquidations. Open interest measures unsettled contracts, and when it climbs quickly alongside price it usually signals new leverage rather than spot demand. The long and short ratio adds the directional distribution.
None of the three predicts price. They describe how fragile the structure is. A market with elevated open interest, persistently positive funding and a heavy long skew is not bound to fall, but if it does, the liquidation total will dwarf a normal session. Options expiries belong on the same calendar, which is what the Bitcoin options expiry calendar tracks.
What Can Be Controlled at the Position Level
Only two variables are genuinely within a trader’s control: leverage and size. Matching the multiple to the drawdown an account can absorb is the plain version of risk management. If weekly swings of 7% are normal for an asset, then running above ten times leverage hands the outcome to volatility rather than to judgment. A detail that gets missed is that a liquidation price moves as unrealized profit and loss on other positions changes, so computing the safety margin on one trade in isolation is unreliable once several positions share an account.
Liquidation data only describes what already happened. What decides the next outcome is the position sitting there right now. Check where your own exposure stands on the BTC spot market.
Misreadings and the Watchlist
Liquidation Volume Is Not Total Investor Loss
This is the most frequent error in reading headlines like this one. The $1.19 billion refers to the notional value of positions forcibly closed, not to money lost by traders. A position with $1,000 of margin at ten times leverage carries $10,000 of notional exposure, and it is the $10,000 that enters the statistic while the trader loses the $1,000. Counting conventions compound the gap, since venues report differently and some stream only sampled data, which is why totals rarely agree across providers.
Treating the figure as net outflow or aggregate loss overstates the event by a wide margin. The defensible use is as a relative measure of how much leverage got cleared, suitable for comparing assets and episodes, which is precisely what makes the sixfold Ether to Bitcoin gap meaningful.
Three Ways This Resolves
In a clean deleveraging, open interest stays down after the drop and funding settles near neutral while positioning rebuilds from a lower base. That structure is healthier than the one that preceded it, and the odds of a cascade on the next shock fall.
In a fast rebuild, price stabilizes and open interest snaps back while funding turns firmly positive again, which simply reconstitutes the same fragility at a lower price level and sets up a repeat on the next macro headline.
In a continued macro squeeze, oil and Treasury yields stay elevated and another Fed hike gets confirmed, leaving risk assets under pressure and producing repeated smaller liquidation events rather than one concentrated flush.
Data Worth Tracking
Whether Ether’s open interest holds near $31.8 billion will show if leverage is genuinely shrinking or merely pausing. The speed at which funding returns from negative to positive is the cleanest read on sentiment repair. On the macro side, the October Fed meeting and the oil price remain the dominant external variables. On price, Bitcoin’s former $83,000 to $87,000 range has broken, and reclaiming its floor is the reference point for structural repair, with live quotes on the BTC price page.
FAQ
What is a crypto liquidation?
A liquidation is the forced closing of a leveraged position when account equity falls below the maintenance margin a venue requires. It is not a decision the trader makes; it is triggered automatically by margin rules. The trigger level follows from entry price, leverage and the maintenance margin rate, and higher leverage leaves less room for adverse movement. At ten times leverage roughly a 10% move against the position exhausts initial margin, with the actual trigger arriving sooner.
How did longs and shorts split in the $1.19 billion flush?
Coinglass data puts the total at $1.191 billion, with $1.056 billion of long liquidations against $135 million of shorts across 192,576 traders, a ratio approaching eight to one. By asset, Bitcoin recorded $273 million of long and $31.5 million of short liquidations, while Ether recorded $294 million of long and $56.5 million of short liquidations. The skew shows leverage was positioned almost entirely for upside before the drop.
Why did Ethereum liquidations exceed Bitcoin’s?
In absolute terms Ether’s $356 million exceeded Bitcoin’s $298 million by about 20%. Adjusted for market value, where Ether is less than a fifth of Bitcoin’s size, the figures work out to roughly $1.2 million of liquidations per $1 billion of market cap against about $180,000, a gap of around six times. The drivers are higher leverage density on Ether, structurally higher volatility, and the fact that much Bitcoin exposure sits in unleveraged ETF and long-horizon holdings.
Does the liquidation total equal how much investors lost?
No. The figure measures the notional value of positions closed, while a trader’s loss is the margin posted. A $1,000 margin position at ten times leverage carries $10,000 of notional, and the statistic counts the $10,000 while the loss is $1,000. Reporting conventions differ between venues, and some stream sampled rather than complete data, which is why totals vary by provider. The number is best read as a relative gauge of leverage cleared, not as aggregate loss.
How does a liquidation cascade form?
A first wave of liquidations sells at market, the selling pushes price lower, the next cluster of liquidation prices is reached, and the loop continues. Thinner liquidity means a given amount of forced selling moves price further, which accelerates the chain. The largest single liquidation in this event was $19.98 million in the ETH-USD market on Hyperliquid. Overnight sessions carry shallower order books, which is one reason cascades often concentrate outside peak trading hours.
Can funding rates and open interest warn of this in advance?
They flag structural fragility rather than direction. Funding that stays firmly positive indicates crowded long positioning and a high cost of carry, while open interest building quickly during a rally points to new leverage rather than spot demand. When both sit at extremes the market will not necessarily fall, but any fall produces outsized liquidations. Ahead of this event, Ether contract open interest dropped 7.53% in a single session to about $31.8 billion.
Was this a large liquidation event by historical standards?
Not particularly. It landed one day before the anniversary of October 10, 2025, when roughly $19 billion was liquidated in a single day, about sixteen times this total. At $1.19 billion this ranks as an ordinary deleveraging. What distinguishes it is the eight to one imbalance between long and short liquidations and Ether’s sixfold liquidation density relative to Bitcoin once market value is taken into account.
How can traders reduce the chance of being liquidated?
The most effective step is matching leverage to the volatility actually experienced. If 7% weekly swings are normal for an asset, running above ten times leverage hands the outcome to volatility rather than analysis. It also helps to remember that a liquidation price shifts as unrealized profit and loss on other positions changes, so per-trade safety margins mislead when several positions share an account.
