Microsoft has fixed an issue in Windows 11 that could result in a black screen after the user logs into their computer. You’ll find the fix in update KB5127648, available now for Windows 11 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2.
In the update release notes, the bug fix is addressed as:
[Windows Explorer (Known issue)] Fixed: This update fixes an issue that affects Windows Explorer in multi-user environments, such as Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogix. After sign-in, Explorer.exe might fail to start or repeatedly crash, causing a black screen.
In short, there was a bug in File Explorer that surfaced in multi-user environments like Azure Virtual Desktop and FSLogic. Microsoft doesn’t provide much detail about the bug itself, but the gist is that it caused repeated crashes of Explorer.exe after logging in, which prevented the desktop from loading and resulted in a black screen.
This bug first came to light after the August Windows update. If you’re running into black screens on Windows 11 after logging in, you should install the latest Windows update to address it.
This is just one of the many bug fixes in the October update, which also fixed mouse stutter in games for some users. And not only bug fixe, but this update also brings some much-needed improvements elsewhere, including more reliable Bluetooth and a remappable Copilot key.
