Bitcoin and Ether already move fast enough to give a cautious investor heartburn. Volatility Shares wants to triple that.
On October 2, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved a rule change that lets the Cboe BZX Exchange list six triple-leveraged exchange-traded products from Volatility Shares. Two of them are the most eye-catching: a 3x Bitcoin ETF and a 3x Ether ETF.
The approval marks the first time a US regulator has given a green light to crypto products with this much leverage. There is a catch, though, and it is a meaningful one. The funds can be listed, but they cannot start trading yet.
What the SEC actually approved
The SEC order, filed as Release 34-106577, signs off on the exchange’s ability to list the products. That is a separate step from letting investors buy them.
Before either fund can trade, the SEC must declare its Form S-1 registration statement effective. The S-1 is the disclosure document that tells investors what they are buying and what can go wrong. The agency has not set a timeline for that review.
The proposed tickers are BITH for the 3x Bitcoin ETF and ETHK for the 3x Ether ETF. No launch date has been announced for either.
Both funds aim to deliver three times the daily performance of their underlying futures benchmarks. They do not hold spot Bitcoin or Ether directly. Instead, they track futures-based measures of each asset’s price.
The legal structure matters here too. These products fall under the Securities Act of 1933, not the Investment Company Act of 1940. That distinction means they are not subject to the 1940 Act’s leverage limits, which is how a 3x product becomes possible in the first place.
A familiar name pushing the leverage envelope
Volatility Shares is not new to leveraged crypto. The firm already runs a 2x Bitcoin ETF under the ticker BITX, and it manages over $1.2 billion in assets through that fund.
How triple leverage really works
The word that matters most in these fund descriptions is daily. The funds target three times the return of a single day, then reset and do it again the next day.
That reset is called daily rebalancing. Each evening, the fund adjusts its positions so it can deliver 3x exposure again the following session.
Over one day, the math is straightforward. If the benchmark rises, the fund aims to rise roughly three times as much, before fees and costs. If the benchmark falls, the fund aims to fall three times as much.
Over longer stretches, things get messier. Because the leverage resets daily, returns compound in ways that can drift sharply away from three times the asset’s longer-term move.
This drift is often called volatility decay. In choppy markets, where prices swing up and down without going anywhere, a leveraged fund can lose value even if the underlying asset ends roughly where it started. The bigger and more frequent the swings, the harder the decay bites.
Put simply, these are tools for people who plan to hold for hours or days, not years.
What this means for traders and the market
For active traders, the appeal is obvious. A listed 3x product would offer amplified crypto exposure through a regular brokerage account, without opening a derivatives account or managing margin directly.
For Volatility Shares, the approval positions the firm to extend a product line that already has a meaningful asset base through BITX. If the S-1 filings clear, BITH and ETHK would give it a more aggressive option for the same type of customer.
There are open questions worth tracking. The first is timing: with no schedule set for the S-1 reviews, the funds could sit in limbo for an unknown period. Listing approval without trading approval is progress, but it does not put a single share in anyone’s account.
The third is the remaining four products in the six-fund approval. The headline attention has gone to Bitcoin and Ether, but the full slate shows Volatility Shares is building a broader triple-leveraged lineup on Cboe BZX.
For now, the key milestone to watch is the SEC declaring the registration statements effective. Until that happens, BITH and ETHK remain approved for a listing they cannot yet use.
