Aizawl, Oct 21: Mizoram Police observed Police Commemoration Day on Wednesday with a parade and wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
The main commemorative programme was held at the Martyrs Memorial at the 1st Battalion Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) Headquarters in Aizawl at 7 am. The event was attended by the Director General of Police (DGP), senior police officers and representatives of other security agencies, who paid homage to the fallen personnel.
Police Commemoration Day is observed across India every year on October 21 to honour the supreme sacrifice of 10 police personnel who were killed in an ambush by Chinese forces on October 21, 1959. The personnel, belonging to the 3rd Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), were on patrol in the Hot Springs area of Ladakh when the incident occurred. Seven other personnel were injured and captured.
Following the incident, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories adopted a resolution in 1960 to observe October 21 as Police Commemoration Day. Since then, the day has been marked nationwide to honour police personnel who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.
According to Mizoram Police, 154 police personnel across the country lost their lives in the line of duty between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026. No Mizoram Police personnel died in the line of duty during this period. However, since 1966, a total of 54 Mizoram Police personnel have made the supreme sacrifice.
At the national level, the Police Commemoration Day Parade 2026 was held at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi at 7:55 am on Wednesday. The Union Home Minister attended the programme as the chief guest, while the Director of the Intelligence Bureau read out the names of police personnel who died in the line of duty over the past year. A joint parade featuring Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police was also organised.
The Union Home Minister also flagged off a motorcycle rally from the National Police Memorial. The rally is scheduled to join the Ekta Parade 2026 at Kevadia, Gujarat, on October 31.
Meanwhile, an eight-member Mizoram Police motorcycle rally team was flagged off from Police Headquarters in Aizawl on October 6 by Mizoram DGP Sharad Agarwal. The team will also participate in the Ekta Parade 2026 in Gujarat.
The observance serves as a reminder of the courage, dedication and sacrifices of police personnel who continue to safeguard the nation and protect society.
