Real Madrid reportedly explored a move for Yan Diomande in 2025, when the Ivorian attacker was still playing for Leganes, but abandoned the pursuit because of the number of wingers already available in the squad.
According to El Mundo, the Spanish giants’ interest predated the forward’s breakthrough at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and his subsequent arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Diomande eventually joined Real Madrid from RB Leipzig in a deal worth €125 million plus a further €15 million in potential add-ons, signing a contract that runs until 2033.
His recent impact against Sevilla, when he provided an assist and scored a stunning goal, has offered an early glimpse of why Real Madrid were determined to secure his signature.

The club opened negotiations when he was at Leganes, but the existing depth of options on the wings meant there was no clear pathway for him into the squad.
Diomande instead moved to RB Leipzig, where he continued his development before attracting renewed attention from Europe’s leading clubs.
According to El Mundo, Real Madrid’s earlier decision was driven by squad composition rather than a lack of interest in the player’s potential.
And by the time Real Madrid returned to the race, Diomande’s performances had strengthened his reputation and increased the competition for his signature.

The report indicates that Rodrygo’s injury helped push Real Madrid back into the transfer market, while Diomande’s impressive 2026 World Cup campaign reinforced the club’s conviction that he was worth pursuing.
Paris Saint-Germain were also interested in the Ivorian, and Diomande had been close to joining the French club.
Los Blancos’ intervention, however, changed the situation, with the attacker ultimately choosing the Spanish side instead.
The resulting transfer carried an enormous financial commitment. At €125 million guaranteed, with up to €15 million in add-ons, Diomande arrived under the pressure that naturally accompanies a record-breaking signing.
