Guwahati, Oct 16: The Gauhati High Court on Friday granted bail to suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandipan Garg in connection with the death of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. Sandipan, the late singer’s cousin, is the second among the seven accused in the main case to secure bail.
Sandipan Garg had been lodged in Baksa jail since his arrest in October 2025. He faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He had accompanied Zubeen Garg to Singapore in September 2025 and was present during a yacht outing at Lazarus Island, shortly before the singer died while swimming in the sea.
His bail plea was heard by Justice Rajesh Mazumdar over the past week. Senior advocate Anand Bhuyan represented Sandipan Garg. After proceedings remained inconclusive on Wednesday, the High Court issued the order granting him bail.
Sandipan is expected to be released from custody shortly after Durga Puja, following the completion of the mandatory legal formalities before the Fast-Track/Sessions Court.
Sandipan’s bail follows the Gauhati High Court’s October 9 order granting conditional bail to another accused, singer Amritprabha Mahanta. She was released from Haflong sub-jail against a bail bond of ₹50,000 and two sureties, becoming the first accused in the main death case to secure bail.
In Mahanta’s bail order, the bench observed that the investigation materials and witness statements examined at that stage did not establish a prima facie case of conspiracy or murder against her.
However, the court clarified that these observations were confined to the bail proceedings and would not affect the ongoing trial before the Fast-Track Court in Kamrup Metropolitan Sessions Court.
Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, triggering widespread public outcry and a high-profile investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam Police.
A total of seven individuals were chargesheeted in the case. Besides Sandipan Garg and Amritprabha Mahanta, the other accused facing trial are event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, former manager Siddhartha Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and personal security officers Nandeswar Borah and Paresh Baishya.
With two of the seven accused now granted bail, proceedings against the remaining accused continue as the trial before the Fast-Track Court progresses.
