The Los Angeles Chargers have now lost six straight games, which drops them to 0-6 on the season, which puts them in a very tough position as they head into the bye week.
Following the Week 6 loss to the Chiefs, the Chargers have now sunk to near the bottom of the latest power rankings, and with that said, it is possible changes could be happening at some point soon in an attempt to salvage what appears to be a lost season thus far.
After the Week 6 results, the Bleacher Report NFL staff posted their Week 7 NFL power rankings, and in those rankings, the Chargers were placed at the No. 31 overall spot, meaning that the only team they are ahead of is the 0-5 Miami Dolphins, who sit at No. 32 overall in the Bleacher Report power rankings.
Clearly, this is not a great place to be at all as this team had aspirations to be a high-end playoff contender and maybe even compete for an AFC West title, but as of now both of those goals appear to be off the table.
When it comes to the thoughts from head coach Jim Harbaugh, he acknowledged that changes do need to be made when he addressed the media after the game. "Definitely, offensively, we need to evaluate," he said. We need to look at it all — everything we're doing, how we're doing it," Harbaugh said.
After seeing this quote from Harbaugh and thinking about the overall performance of the Chargers this season, it is evident that the whole team has not performed up to their potential, but in particular, the offense under offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has really disappointed based on the expectations that were set before the season.
Specifically, quarterback Justin Herbert and the offense have really had issues getting going as a unit and have struggled with turnovers. For the season, Los Angeles has turned the ball over 15 times, which is the most in the NFL, and they have forced 10 turnovers, which has led to a differential of -5, which is the fourth-worst in the entire league.
While Herbert has struggled, a key part of that is the offense simply not clicking together when it comes to the play calling from McDaniel, as well as a ton of injuries on the offensive line, at the wide receiver position, and even at the tight end position.
Ultimately, Herbert and the offense do have to play much better, but the injuries have really piled up and that has put players in positions they do not normally play and added onto that, McDaniel has been unable to find plays that help Herbert and the rest of the offense to find consistent success with.
With Los Angeles heading into the bye week, it is worth wondering what changes could be made and if that does mean McDaniel could be relieved of his duties or if Harbaugh will give McDaniel another chance when the Chargers take the field again in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams in what is a must-win game.
For the Chargers, being able to make the playoffs or win the AFC West are very much in doubt based on the rough start, but what this team can do is find a way to use what they have to build some momentum and get that first win, which could possibly jump start a win streak if the offense, defense, and special teams can all figure it out during the same game.
So, as the Chargers progress through their bye week, it will be interesting to see if any major changes are made when it comes to the coaching staff as well as the roster, and when Los Angeles is back on the field in Week 8, it will be worth watching how this team responds and if they can get in the win column, because if not, this team could truly be in a position where they have to shift focus to 2027 rather than 2026.
