Torit women call for greater participation in leadership, implementation of 35% affirmative action Women and youth leaders in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, have called for greater participation in government and public institutions, urging authorities to implement South Sudan’s 35% affirmative action commitment.
The call was made on Friday, October 23, 2026, during a public awareness campaign organised by Root of Generations (ROG), with support from Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA). The event brought together women and youth leaders, government representatives, political parties, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, electoral stakeholders and members of the public.
Speaking during the campaign, ROG Executive Director Dorong Grace said the 35% affirmative action commitment should be viewed as an investment in stronger institutions and representative leadership.
“The 35% affirmative action is not a favour to women, and it is not a competition between women and men. It is an investment in stronger institutions, better decisions and more representative leadership,” she said.
Grace said women were already contributing to leadership in families, communities, markets, schools, churches, civil society organisations and public institutions.
“The question is no longer whether women can lead. Women are already leading. The question is whether our institutions, political parties and communities are creating sufficient space for them to participate and influence decisions,” she added.
The campaign urged political parties and government institutions to turn the 35% commitment into visible representation and meaningful leadership responsibilities for women.
Families and communities were also encouraged to support qualified women and young people seeking to serve in leadership positions.
Young people were urged to participate responsibly in public affairs and contribute their ideas and energy to national development, unity and stability.
The campaign also promoted national unity, responsible civic participation and meaningful participation of women in leadership.
ROG commended NPA, the Eastern Equatoria State Government, participating institutions, community leaders, women, youth and members of the public for supporting the campaign.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to working with stakeholders to promote women’s empowerment, youth participation and inclusive leadership. “35% is our shared commitment.
Women’s participation strengthens leadership, and youth participation secures our future,” she added.
