It was an evening to forget for Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma against his former employers as Manchester City fell to a 4-2 defeat at home against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, earning criticism from various media outlets despite saving a late Ferran Torres penalty.
A night to forget for Donnarumma against PSG
Enzo Maresca’s City were picked apart by the back-to-back European champions at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening: Donnarumma was beaten at his near post by a low, long-range effort from Desire Doue after a brilliant end-to-end team move in the 13th minute. Ousmane Dembele nodded in a second for the visitors less than two minutes later.
Vitinha made it three shortly after the half-hour mark, whilst Achraf Hakimi had hit the woodwork moments prior.
The fourth PSG goal was the most unfortunate: Donnarumma had initially appeared to make a strong one-handed save to Maghnes Akliouche’s shot from the edge of the area, which was destined for the top corner, but the spin of the ball after the save sent the ball bouncing back towards the Man City net; the Italian scrambling as he unsuccessfully tried to paw it away.
A brace from Erling Haaland made for an eventual 4-2 scoreline, but there was a late consolation for Donnarumma, as he kept out a 90th-minute penalty from PSG’s Ferran Torres.

It was a hectic night for the Italy national team captain, who earned scored of 4/10 and 5/10 from most media outlets after full-time.
The Manchester Evening News gave him a score of 5/10, Sports Illustrated gave him a rating of 5.4, and GOAL rated him at 4/10, questioning his positioning for Vitinha’s opener and his organisation of the Manchester City back line.
Newspapers in France were considerably harsher: l’Equpie giving him a rating of 2/10 and labelling him the ‘main culprit’ behind Man City’s defeat.
