Christopher Nolan has spent the past decade turning original films into major box-office events, from the mind-bending sci-fi thriller Tenet to the Oscar-winning biographical drama Oppenheimer. His latest blockbuster, The Odyssey, has continued that streak, bringing Homer’s ancient epic to theaters this summer.
Now, moviegoers will have another chance to revisit one of Nolan’s earlier films — a twist-filled mystery thriller that’s returning to theaters for the first time in years.
The Prestige, Nolan’s 2006 film starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as rival magicians, is returning to theaters on Jan. 29, 2027, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The Walt Disney Studios rerelease will include 70 mm and IMAX screenings, marking the first time the film has been presented in those formats.
What Is The Prestige About?
Based on Christopher Priest’s novel, The Prestige follows two rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London. Hugh Jackman stars as Robert Angier, a charismatic showman, while Christian Bale plays Alfred Borden, a gifted illusionist. The two begin as friends and partners, but a stage trick gone wrong turns their professional rivalry into a bitter personal feud.
As Angier and Borden become increasingly obsessed with outdoing each other, they resort to deception, sabotage and increasingly dangerous illusions in pursuit of becoming the greatest magician alive. The film’s nonlinear storytelling and carefully planted clues make it a favorite among fans of Nolan’s puzzle-box narratives.
Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson also star, alongside Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, and David Bowie.
The Prestige received strong reviews following its 2006 release and earned two Academy Award nominations, for cinematography and art direction. Its reputation has only grown over the years, with its intricate plot and memorable final reveal making it one of Nolan’s most enduring films. The 2027 re-release will give fans a chance to revisit the mystery on the big screen, including in 70mm and IMAX formats for the first time.
