The travel advisory update warns of potential escalation by Iranian-backed Houthis, while keeping Israel at Level 3 and maintaining Level 4 restrictions in designated border areas.
The US State Department issued an updated travel advisory notice for Israel on Friday, warning of an increased threat of armed attacks by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists and the potential for a rapid escalation of regional hostilities.
The update did not change Israel's overall travel advisory classification, which remains at Level 3, urging American citizens to reconsider travel due to terrorism and unrest. The existing risk indicators and restrictions on travel to certain areas of the country also remain unchanged.
In its warning on armed conflict, the State Department cited previous Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, including strikes on civilian airports and critical infrastructure that resulted in civilian casualties and major travel disruptions.
The department warned that hostilities involving the Houthis could escalate rapidly beyond the areas immediately affected, potentially posing additional risks to travelers across the region.
The updated warning comes against the backdrop of previous missile threats originating from Yemen, which have required Israel to activate air defense systems and issue civilian alerts.
US maintains restrictions on travel to Israeli border areas
Despite the updated regional threat assessment, Washington has not raised its overall warning level for Israel. The State Department continues to advise Americans to reconsider travel because of terrorism and unrest, while maintaining stricter Level 4 restrictions in several designated areas.
These restrictions cover areas north of the Route 85, Route 90, and Route 87 boundaries in northern Israel; locations within 11.3 kilometers of the Gaza Strip; and areas within 2.4 kilometers of the Israel-Egypt border, except near the Taba crossing, also known as the Menachem Begin crossing.
The State Department said Israeli authorities restrict travel in the designated northern areas because of IDF activity and presence, and instructed Americans not to travel there for any reason.
US government employees working in Israel face the same geographical restrictions. Official travel to these areas requires approval from the US Embassy's security office.
The advisory also reiterated that, as of August 26, family members are permitted to accompany US government employees stationed in Israel. However, Washington warned that additional security measures affecting US personnel could be introduced as conditions evolve.
The State Department emphasized that Israel's security environment remains complex and can change rapidly, warning that violence could occur without advance notice.
Regional tensions could also prompt airlines to cancel flights or reduce services to and from Israel, potentially disrupting travel plans even in areas not subject to the highest-level restrictions.
Americans urged to prepare for missile and drone threats
The advisory urged American citizens planning to visit Israel to remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and familiarize themselves with emergency procedures.
Travelers were advised to identify nearby bomb shelters and download the Home Front Command's Red Alert application, or similar services, to receive real-time warnings about incoming rockets, missiles and armed drones.
Israel's Home Front Command emergency warning systems have been used during previous missile attacks, providing residents with alerts intended to help them reach protected areas.
The military has also updated its advance-warning capabilities to give civilians more time to prepare for certain missile threats.
The State Department encouraged American travelers to enroll in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which enables the US Embassy to distribute security updates and contact citizens or their emergency contacts during a crisis.
Americans were also urged to develop independent evacuation plans that do not rely on US government assistance, follow instructions from local security officials, and exercise particular caution near checkpoints and areas with a significant security presence.
The advisory further recommended purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation assistance, and trip cancellations.
The warnings underscore the continued importance of civilian preparedness amid regional missile and drone threats, with Israeli authorities having previously reviewed the timing and operation of emergency alerts during periods of heightened tensions.
Although the October 23 notice highlighted the increased potential for Houthi aggression, it did not announce additional restrictions on travel to Israel or a change in the State Department's assessment of the country's overall travel risk.
