Oklahoma State safety Evan Jackson was unsure what to do after scooping a loose ball for a touchdown against UCF on Saturday. He later told reporters he was “kind of at a loss for words” during the run, according to Yahoo Sports. The play helped seal a 42-28 win for the Cowboys in front of a packed crowd at Boone Pickens Stadium.
This moment wasn’t just luck. Jackson said the team practices scooping the ball every single day. He saw the ball, grabbed it, and ran 28 yards to the end zone. It was the big play that changed the game for Oklahoma State.
A Play Born From Practice
Many fans think great plays happen by accident. Jackson proved that wrong on Saturday afternoon. He didn’t just happen to be in the right spot. He had trained for this exact moment. “We practice it every day, scooping the ball up, so just went ahead and did that,” Jackson said.
The situation looked messy at first. Quarterback Keyone Jenkins lost the football behind the line of scrimmage. Jackson reacted fast. He grabbed the loose ball and started running. The crowd was quiet for a split second before making a huge noise. Jackson described hearing a “big pop” as he ran toward the goal line.
He wasn’t sure what to do next. He was thinking about his score and his celebration all at once. “I’m just lost for words on that moment,” Jackson said. That confusion shows how big the moment was for him. He couldn’t even pick a dance move right away.
Turning the Tide in the Fourth Quarter
The game was tight before this play. Oklahoma State led by only six points with 12:11 left in the fourth quarter. Sam Keltner had just kicked a field goal to make it 27-21. The UCF Knights were still in the game. They had a chance to take the lead if they could move the ball.
That chance ended when Jenkins fumbled. Jackson’s return changed everything. The touchdown made it 35-21 after a successful two-point conversion by Drew Mestemaker. Suddenly, the Cowboys had a two-touchdown lead. It was a huge shift in momentum that UCF could not overcome.
Coach Eric Morris saw the whole thing from the sideline. He praised Jackson for not hesitating. “Super close play, and didn’t hesitate.” Morris stated that after spotting the ball on the ground, he went, scooped it, and scored. The coach also gave credit to the referees for letting the play continue. Morris noted that the team captured the momentum right then.
The defense kept the pressure on after the score. They forced UCF to turn the ball over on downs. This gave the offense the ball back to score again. Mestemaker threw another touchdown pass to Wyatt Young. The final score was 42-28, but that one play in the fourth quarter was the key.
This was Oklahoma State’s fourth straight win. Jackson’s play defined the game. It showed that the team is ready for big moments. The defense stepped up when it mattered most. They didn’t let UCF get comfortable with a close score.
The crowd at Boone Pickens Stadium saw something special. They went from silent to loud in seconds. That energy helped the team finish strong. Jackson’s ability to stay calm and run for the score showed great awareness. He knew he had to score, and he knew he had to do it fast.
It was a product of hard work and good coaching. The team practices these drills daily. They teach players to be “Johnny on the spot.” Jackson was exactly that on Saturday. He saw the ball, grabbed it, and made it count. That is what winning teams do when the game is on the line.
UCF tried to answer with a late score, but it was too little, too late. The Cowboys held on for the victory.
