By Breaking Belize News Staff: A second suspect has been charged and remanded to prison in connection with the armed home invasion of a Belize City taco vendor, during which more than $2,500 worth of jewelry was stolen.
Celestino Anwar Zetina, 24, appeared before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison on Friday, October 9, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated burglary. Bail was denied because the alleged offence involved firearms, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until November 2, 2026.
Zetina joins 18-year-old Shawn Garbutt, who was previously charged and remanded in connection with the same incident. Both men are scheduled to appear in court together on November 2.
The charges stem from an armed home invasion at the Castle Street residence of a taco vendor. According to police, the woman was leaving her home at approximately 5:50 a.m. when two masked men, allegedly armed with firearms, confronted her and forced her back inside while demanding money.
The intruders reportedly stole a jewelry box containing a gold chain, diamond rings and other jewelry valued at approximately $2,525 before escaping.
Garbutt was arraigned on September 28 and pleaded not guilty. During his initial court appearance, he reportedly claimed police had only found him in possession of an elephant pendant and that he had initially been told he would face a charge of handling stolen goods rather than aggravated burglary.
With Zetina’s arraignment, both accused men are now behind bars awaiting further court proceedings. The allegations against them have not been proven in court.
