By Breaking Belize News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño says the announcement of direct air service between Germany and Belize represents a major breakthrough after successive governments spent years attempting to attract a European airline.
Speaking on Wednesday, Briceño welcomed the agreement with Discover Airlines, describing it as an exciting development that could open an important new tourism market.
He explained that many European tourists have expressed interest in visiting Belize but have instead chosen competing destinations because of the difficulty and time involved in reaching the country.
According to Briceño, some European travelers currently face journeys extending over two days when connecting through other international airports.
The new service is expected to make Belize substantially more accessible to visitors from Germany and other European countries.
Briceño said several administrations had attempted to secure such a connection without success, making the agreement an important milestone for Belize’s tourism industry.
According to the airline’s October 20 announcement, flights will begin on December 16, 2027, operating on Thursdays and Sundays until mid-April 2028.
The service will connect Frankfurt, one of Europe’s major aviation hubs, with the Philip Goldson International Airport.
Discover Airlines will become the first European carrier to introduce the scheduled service, giving Belize an opportunity to strengthen its presence in a tourism market that has traditionally relied on connections through North America and other international gateways.
Briceño expressed optimism that the route will attract additional visitors, encourage investment and create opportunities for businesses throughout Belize’s tourism sector.
