The Milwaukee Brewers are in the World Series for the first time since 1982, and for the first time as a member of the National League. Indeed, the city of Milwaukee has not seen a World Series win since 1957, when legends Hank Aaron, Eddie Matthews, and Warren Spahn led the Braves to victory in seven games.
To be frank, the city and its fans are starving for a World Series, a fact that the organization and players know all too well. For one Brewers player, though, this trip to the Fall Classic carries a great deal of meaning even though his role on the team is somewhat small.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dustin May did not think he would ever pitch again
Dustin May won a World Series while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. While that experience was, no doubt, meaningful, he says that this series against the Tampa Bay Rays means more to him than the World Series he already won.
Back in 2024, May suffered a life-threatening esophageal tear when he choked on a piece of lettuce. At that moment, baseball took a back seat to living.
“For me, it means more to be here in this moment today knowing two years ago, looking back where I was, I wasn’t really sure if I was ever going to play again,” May told MLB Network. “So being able to be here in this moment, it truly means the world to me.”
Los Angeles used the injury as an excuse to trade May to the Boston Red Sox, and from there he found himself playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, who traded him to Milwaukee (along with JoJo Romero) ahead of this year’s deadline.
May started Game Three of the NLDS, but did not make it out of the third inning. In the NLCS, he was used out of the bullpen and threw an inning of scoreless ball in Game Two. May pitched three innings in Game Four, but allowed three runs on Shohei Ohtani’s three-run bomb.
It did not matter, of course, as the Brewers went on to win the contest and complete the sweep of Los Angeles.
