The foundation's ambitions go beyond helping children find an interest in music. It also aims to develop practical skills and open up pathways into the wider music business including songwriting, production, performance and apprenticeships.
For some children, a music lesson can start something much bigger than learning to play an instrument. It can offer confidence, belonging, a glimpse of a future they could never have dreamed of.
British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran knows this from experience, and one of his latest initiatives aims to open up those opportunities to more young people across the UK. Scroll down to see the details.
beyond the classroom
Ed Sheeran Foundation was launched in 2025 to improve access to high-quality music education, particularly for children who might otherwise be excluded because of financial or social barriers, AP News reports. The initiative works with schools and grassroots music organizations to help them maintain existing programs and grow opportunities for young people. With its organizational funding, the foundation says it has supported 18 schools and grassroots organizations to date, reaching about 12,000 young people. The foundation data shows its partners work with communities facing a range of challenges including children from low-income households, those in care and young people with special educational needs.Instead of focusing on individual talent, the initiative supports the organizations that provide music lessons, instruments and creative experiences at community level.
The aim is to strengthen music education across the country and ensure that access isn’t determined by a child's financial status, AP News reports.
A personal relationship with music
For Sheeran, the cause is tied closely to his own childhood. When he was young, a teacher encouraged him to write songs and he gradually acquired the skills that would form the basis of his career. AP News says his experience has reinforced his conviction that teachers and early exposure to music can have a lasting effect. The singer has also discussed the effect music had on his mental wellbeing, giving him a sense of purpose and achievement as he grew up. His foundation is committed to providing children with those same opportunities, whether it is learning piano or cello, getting into music production, songwriting or performing in front of an audience.Sheeran was in schools and youth groups in Cardiff, Coventry, Edinburgh and Belfast to mark the launch of the initiative.
The online report describes how he teamed up with his longtime songwriting partner Amy Wadge for an engagement with pupils in Cardiff, sharing his experiences and encouraging them to think about music as a serious career path. His visit to Wales was particularly important. As a teenager, Sheeran traveled to Cardiff to work on songs with Wadge, an experience that became an important step in his development as a songwriter, the report adds.
Creating avenues to the industry
The foundation's ambitions go beyond helping children find an interest in music. It also aims to develop practical skills and open up pathways into the wider music business including songwriting, production, performance and apprenticeships. There are many more opportunities in the industry than just on the stage, such as sound engineering, tour production, and management and technical operations. Sheeran’s own touring productions require large teams working behind the scenes, demonstrating the depth of careers connected to music.
The British music industry employed 216,000 people in 2023, according to a UK Music report that highlighted the sector's scale, AP News reported. The Ed Sheeran Foundation is supporting schools and grassroots organizations to link those early musical experiences to longer term opportunities. It currently reaches 12,000 young people and that will grow as its network grows. The wider ambition is that a lack of resources will not stop the next generation from finding their voice through music.Images Courtesy: Instagram/edsheeranfnd
