The Colombo Stock Exchange closed lower for a second consecutive session on 20 October 2026, with both benchmark indices weakening as investor participation remained cautious.
The ASPI declined 75.64 points, or 0.38%, to 19,983.78, while the S&P SL20 fell 19.24 points, or 0.34%, to 5,681.51. The ASPI slipped below the key 20,000 psychological level around midday before recovering modestly from its intraday lows, although the rebound was insufficient to regain the level by the close.
Market turnover remained subdued at LKR 794.96 million, with 25.88 million shares traded. The Banks sector led activity with approximately LKR 250.97 million in turnover, while Sampath Bank recorded the highest individual counter turnover at LKR 154.77 million.
Crossings accounted for around 30% of total turnover, led by Sampath Bank with LKR 138.00 million, followed by Melstacorp with LKR 57.55 million and Access Engineering with LKR 44.86 million.
Market breadth remained weak, with only 57 gainers against 149 decliners, resulting in an advance-decline ratio of 0.38. Foreign investors also remained net sellers, recording an outflow of approximately LKR 59.79 million.
LOLC Holdings was the largest negative contributor to the ASPI, followed by Dialog Axiata, Hatton National Bank, LAMB.N and Overseas Realty. SMB Finance provided the strongest positive contribution, followed by C T Holdings, Namunukula Plantations, ASPH.N and John Keells Holdings.
The afternoon recovery indicates that some buying support emerged at lower levels, but subdued turnover, weak breadth and continued foreign selling suggest broader conviction remains limited. The market’s ability to reclaim and sustain the 20,000 level will remain an important near-term indicator of sentiment.
