(ANSA) - ROME, 12 OTT - Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli announced on Monday that the scenic Lazio town of Civita da Bagnoregio and the nearby lakeside town of Bolsena will be Italy's capital of contemporary art in 2028, having beaten off competition from Capri, Padua and Pozzuoli.
Civita da Bagnoregio and Bolsena will get one million euros in public money to finance the programme of cultural events proposed in the joint bid to be the capital of contemporary art.
Perched on top of a hill among the valleys formed by the Chiaro and Torbido rivers and accessible only via a footbridge, Civita appears to cling to the edge of a cliff.
Founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago, there is the danger that the village could eventually disappear because of progressive erosion of the hill it stands on, which why Civita is also known as "The Dying Town".
Bolsena sits on eastern shore of Lake Bolsena (ANSA).
