WASHINGTON — The search warrant on “Squad” Rep. Ilhan Omar hasn’t necessarily been “fully” completed, court documents in a legal fight between the feds and the media indicated.
At dawn on Oct. 12, the feds executed a search warrant and raided Omar’s (D-Minn.) DC home as part of a probe into her immigration status in a stunning move less than a month out from the Nov. 3 election.
To justify keeping the details of the records for the warrant under wraps from numerous media outlets, US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro cited concerns that it wasn’t fully completed.
“[G]ood cause exists to extend these deadlines until after the subject search warrant has been fully executed,” Pirro and her team wrote in a court filing Wednesday.
Pirro’s team didn’t shed light on what elements of the warrant are still outstanding and when it is expected to be fully executed.
Over a dozen media outlets had filed a petition in the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Thursday of last week to obtain the search warrant documents amid the frenzy over Omar.
The court documents also give a clue about the feds’ interest in her previous marriage. They refer to the congresswoman under an alias, “Nur Said Elmi,” in reference to her relationship with her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
Little is known about Elmi, but a Somali forum speculated that he was actually her brother and the two married for immigration-related reasons.
Omar previously said in a 2016 statement that she had filed for a marriage license with her other ex-husband, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, in 2002 at the age of 19, but they “never finalized the application and thus were never legally married.”
She later married Hirsi in 2018 and divorced a year later.
In between all that time, she was legally married to Elmi, her speculated brother, from 2009 to 2017. Omar claimed those two split “in our faith tradition” in 2011, but they were slow to get the paperwork done.
She has adamantly denied unproven theories that she married her brother. The theroy was that the two married in a bid to help him get a green card, which ultimately didn’t work out.
Omar called the unproven theory “insane” and a right-wing conspiracy.
When asked if she had any biological relationship to Elmi, the congresswoman hedged and told MS NOW, “Not to my knowledge.”
“I don’t think that [US Attorneys] would make up names,” Blanche told reporters Thursday when asked about Omar’s alias being listed as “Nur Said Elmi.”
The Post previously reported that the feds have DNA evidence they believe can prove Omar committed immigration fraud. One of the sources suggested the evidence could show that Elmi was her brother.
The raid on Omar’s home is believed to pertain to the paperwork she filed to become a US citizen. Omar, who was born in Somalia and came to the US as a refugee in the mid-1990s, had been listed as 17 years old when her father became a citizen in 2000.
Because she was under 18, Omar got her citizenship seamlessly. The probe is purportedly assessing whether Omar was actually 18 at the time it was filed.
Omar has denied wrongdoing and accused the Trump administration of weaponizing the legal system against her for political purposes.
