KwaZulu-Natal is preparing to intensify road safety operations ahead of the festive season after a multi-disciplinary operation along the N11 stopped 226 vehicles and recorded 23 traffic offences, Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said.
The operation, led by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) Dundee at the Chelmsford intersection, also resulted in two motorists being caught driving without a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) and a driver being apprehended on an outstanding warrant of arrest.
Duma said the operation provided an indication of the enforcement motorists could expect during the festive season.
“The heightened execution of the #NenzaniLaEzweni Multi-Disciplinary operation along the N11, at the Chelmsford Intersection, is a clear indication of what will unfold during the festive season,” he said.
Multi-disciplinary operation
The operation involved the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Department of Correctional Services, and the Newcastle and Dannhauser local municipalities. It coincided with Transport Month.
Duma praised RTI Dundee for leading the operation and said its results demonstrated the effectiveness of the province’s multi-disciplinary approach under the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign.
“The success of this operation is a testament to the effectiveness of our multi-disciplinary execution of #NenzaniLaEzweni,” he said.
RTI visibility to increase
Duma said the province would increase the visibility of the RTI as the festive season approached.
He identified distracted driving, drunken driving, speeding and non-compliance with road rules as major contributors to road crashes.
“We are determined to emulate the historic decline in road crashes and fatalities we attained last year during the festive season,” he said.
