When the LA Clippers drafted Cam Christie in the 2024 NBA Draft, there were hopes and expectations that he could blossom into the player his brother Max is.
While those hopes aren't over for Cam, they're over during his tenure with the Clippers. On Wednesday, the Clippers announced that they've waived the 46th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Christie spent two seasons with the LA Clippers, playing a grand total of 68 games in that span.
Why Did the Clippers Waive Cam Christie?
Throughout Christie's two seasons with the Clippers, he never became the shooter that LA needed him to be.
In his last season with the team, Christie averaged 2.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.6 assists on 38/25/76 shooting from the field. He played in 55 games, but only averaged 8.7 minutes. One could argue that he didn't get a fair shake, but he also didn't impress during a lot of his minutes.
Even during a recent preseason game against the Golden State Warriors on October 4, Christie played 28 minutes but shot 2/8 from the field. It wasn't just that the shots weren't falling; much of the shot quality wasn't the best.

Unfortunately, it seemed like the preseason seemed to be the the final straw on why the Clippers pulled the plug on Christie, especially with a loaded guard lineup.
Too Many Guards
As it stands, the LA Clippers are a team that is loaded at the guard position, and there's a reason why they also recently waived Yuki Kawamura, who had a standout game during the preseason.
When looking at the guard rotation, the Clippers have: Darius Garland, Bradley Beal, Kris Dunn, Keaton Wagler, Kobe Sanders, Gradey Dick, and Max Strus to some capacity.
Even with the injuries that the team is currently dealing with, there simply isn't enough room for Cam Christie, nor room for someone who is a struggling shooter.
One should expect the Clippers to play a ton of small ball as they have multiple injuries to Bradley Beal, Jordan Miller, Yanic Konan Niederhauser, Brandon Ingram, Max Strus, and Kobe Sanders.

It's going to be an incredibly tough start to the season for the shorthanded Clippers, but if they can surprise people right now, then they may have a fighting chance at the playoffs when they get healthy. With the way the team has been talking about a competitive spirit at training camp, hopefully they can actually get it done.
