LeBron James Makes Noteworthy Admission After Knicks’ Opening Night Loss

LeBron James left Madison Square Garden with more than a season-opening victory.

The Philadelphia 76ers star also offered a candid assessment of the New York Knicks after spoiling their championship celebration, while Karl-Anthony Towns admitted his team still has work to do.

The 76ers defeated the defending champions 106-100, turning the Knicks' long-awaited ring ceremony into a disappointing start to their title defense.

James finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in his Philadelphia debut.

After the game, James acknowledged the significance of the occasion for New York fans, as per SYN Knicks:

"It was a great night for New York fans. Obviously, it's something… 50+ years. I was a part of that at one point where we hadn't won a major championship in Cleveland in over 50 years. The fans will never forget this moment, will never forget that championship run. We were happy that we were just able to come and play on such a historical night, a historical building, and play the game we love."

James also discussed the challenge of defending Jalen Brunson and Towns. According to SNY Knicks:

"Obviously, KAT is very dangerous when he has space. Anytime JB is handling the ball with KAT popping, it creates a long closeout for guys trying to get to that shot."

Towns, meanwhile, was realistic about where the Knicks stand following their championship season.

"We're not that Knick team yet from last year," he said in post-game comments.

The admission reflects the challenge of starting over after reaching the NBA's summit. New York has the talent to compete again, but Tuesday's loss showed that last season's success does not guarantee another title run.
