When the vast majority of your insurance policies don’t cover the thing you’re insured against, you have a problem. That’s roughly where Bitcoin bears find themselves right now.
Fewer than 5% of Bitcoin put options carry strike prices above $84,000, meaning most bearish positions and hedging strategies are effectively worthless at current spot prices. With Bitcoin trading near $84,500, the options market is telling a clear story: the crowd is positioned for more upside, not a retreat.
What the options data actually says
Total Bitcoin options open interest sits between approximately $39.8 billion and $40 billion, according to data from Deribit. The put-to-call ratio stands at 0.70, meaning call options, which profit when prices rise, outnumber puts by a meaningful margin.
Maximum pain for near-term expiries clusters around $83,500. Max pain is the price at which the largest number of options contracts expire worthless, and it acts as a gravitational center for short-dated prices as expiry approaches.
Put concentration has also migrated. As recently as mid-October, substantial put open interest existed in the $76,000 to $80,000 range, with hundreds of millions in notional value stacked at those levels. That positioning has since faded in prominence as Bitcoin consolidated higher, leaving the bearish camp with fewer active defenses above the current price.
Where the call walls are building
A significant call wall has formed at $95,000, suggesting that a meaningful cohort of traders is positioning for a run toward that level. The setup is worth understanding clearly: bulls have stacked bets on a move to $95,000, while bears have largely been priced out of the protective zone above $84,000.
Bitcoin spent weeks consolidating in the $82,000 to $85,000 range, a stretch that gradually rendered lower-strike puts irrelevant while incentivizing fresh call buying at higher levels.
What the imbalance means for traders
The lack of effective put coverage above $84,000 means that a sudden downward move could catch a portion of the market structurally under-hedged. When hedges aren’t in place, forced selling or panic liquidations can amplify drawdowns faster than they would in a more balanced options environment.
The concentration of call interest at $95,000 creates what traders sometimes call a gamma squeeze setup. As Bitcoin approaches that strike level, market makers who have sold those calls need to buy spot Bitcoin to stay delta-neutral. That buying pressure can mechanically push prices higher, potentially accelerating a move toward and through the resistance level.
The 0.70 put-to-call ratio, while clearly skewed bullish, also serves as a contrarian flag worth noting. Extreme bullish positioning in options markets has historically preceded periods of consolidation or correction, not because sentiment is wrong, but because when everyone is already positioned for upside, the pool of fresh buyers needed to sustain a rally shrinks.
