Modi not an emperor to rule forever, says Sanjay Singh

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national spokesperson Sanjay Singh accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of coming to power through “vote-chori” (vote theft) and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not an “emperor” entitled to rule indefinitely.

Mr. Singh said the Opposition has the right to organise protests and movements to bring about a change of government.

“BJP leaders have been crying continuously for the past two to three days. They are saying that we have spoken about regime change. So, are we in the Opposition supposed to say that PM Modi is a ‘Chakravarti Samrat’ (emperor) and that ruling this country for as long as he lives is his birthright? Is it because he is the son of a king that he has the absolute right to rule like one?” he asked.

Mr. Singh said people have the right to change governments in a democracy and reiterated his allegation that the BJP had come to power through “vote-chori”.

“Our slogan is ‘Vote Chor, Gaddi Chhod’ (Vote thieves, vacate the seat). In 2013, Modi ji himself raised slogans against the government and spoke about overthrowing those in power. BJP leaders, too, used to stage sit-ins and protests outside the Election Commission,” he said.

He pointed out that the BJP was contesting elections in Punjab with the aim of bringing about a change of government.

“We have not taken to the streets to celebrate Narendra Modi’s birthday party. We are facing lathi charges and going to jail, not because we have come here to organise some party for Narendra Modi. We have taken to the streets to bring about a change of government,” Mr. Singh said.
