Alex Scott transfer latest: Why Bournemouth midfielder could command £100m
Alex Scott’s growing reputation is built on a combination that can be easy to miss. The close control attracts attention, but his work when possession changes hands helps explain why Bournemouth could demand a fee rising to £100 million.
The 23-year-old has earned praise from Thomas Tuchel after his full England debut in a 7-0 victory over Croatia. He also has admirers among clubs capable of making a substantial investment in midfield.
According to reporting by Stuart James and Thom Harris for The Athletic, with additional reporting from David Ornstein, Bournemouth could consider a January departure at that price, provided their Premier League status is not in jeopardy.
That qualification matters. Scott is an important part of their team, and any decision would involve balancing a major financial opportunity against the sporting cost of losing him.
Alex Scott earns Thomas Tuchel endorsement
Tuchel’s assessment after the Croatia match captured the breadth of Scott’s contribution.
“He is so smooth on the ball, his decision making is at the highest level. He plays with so much confidence. He is so active, the work-rate off the ball. He is just the complete package.”
Scott’s involvement in England’s opening goal illustrated the technical side of that description. He checked his surroundings before receiving Marc Guehi’s pass, turned away from pressure and found Jude Bellingham, who supplied Harry Kane.
It was a sequence built on awareness and execution. Scott did not need the final pass to influence the attack.
His development has also involved becoming stronger and more tactically assured since leaving Bristol City for Bournemouth. Having previously flourished in an advanced role, he now offers options deeper in midfield.
Bournemouth value extends beyond creative quality
Scott’s defensive contribution has become central to his appeal.
The Athletic’s analysis places him among the leading players for defensive recoveries since the start of last season. His ability to cover ground complements the dribbling and composure that first made him stand out.
Former Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola helped develop that side of his game, but Scott also recognised its importance himself.
“I think that takes you from a good player to a top player,” he told Sky Sports when discussing his improvement without the ball.
Bournemouth’s 5-1 defeat at Chelsea offered an uncomfortable backdrop to the discussion of his value. Scott missed the match with a thigh injury sustained against Croatia.
His absence cannot explain an entire result, but it removed a player capable of both escaping pressure and helping recover possession. Replacing that combination would be a significant challenge.
Chelsea interest gives January prospect added weight
Chelsea previously had a bid rejected for Scott and are presented in the report as a particularly plausible January destination.
Their attempt to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara also fell through on deadline day, leaving an unfulfilled recruitment objective. That context gives their interest greater substance than a simple admiration of Scott’s qualities.
The prospect of pairing him with Moises Caicedo could appeal to Xabi Alonso. Scott’s ability to carry possession forward would offer one potential complement to Chelsea’s existing midfield.
However, a previous approach does not establish that a fresh offer has been submitted. Bournemouth’s conditions and the scale of the expected fee would remain substantial considerations.
Liverpool and Arsenal face questions over timing
Liverpool’s connection is clear through Iraola, while Scott is also highly regarded by other senior figures at the club, according to The Athletic.
An immediate move is less straightforward. Liverpool reportedly consider themselves well supplied in midfield and have high hopes for Trey Nyoni and James McConnell. A summer transfer could therefore be easier to accommodate than a January deal.
Arsenal also admire Scott, although their existing midfield options make a short-term move difficult to justify.
Scott’s contract provides another important element. With little more than 18 months remaining and no plans to sign an extension, Bournemouth face a decision about when to realise his value.
The reported £100 million figure reflects his age, England recognition and increasingly rounded game. Whether a club pays it will depend on need and timing, as much as admiration.
