Suliman Carrim was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police flagged him in an investigation into alleged fraud and corruption involving the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the 49-year-old businessman was arrested on Thursday night while travelling with his family.
He is also facing a charge linked to his alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Mathe said the police cold case unit flagged the suspect over the municipal allegations, which remain under investigation.
“He was flagged by our cold case unit on charges of fraud and corruption that are under investigation that relate to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in the North West province,” she said.
After receiving information that he was preparing to leave the country, the unit alerted the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team.
The case against him stems from his alleged failure to return to the Commission to provide further documentation after previously appearing before it.
Mathe said the commission’s secretary opened a case after Carrim allegedly failed to provide valid reasons for his absence.
Police dismissed speculation that the businessman was fleeing South Africa, saying he had a return ticket.
