Colombian-Spanish rider David Alonso will make his MotoGP debut in 2027 with Pro Honda LCR, which welcomed him with an emotional video on Oct. 20. The 20-year-old Moto3 world champion will join the team after two seasons in Moto2, completing the move announced by Honda in July.
The video featured Alonso preparing for his new chapter, including a ticket marked “Bogota-Honda” and Colombia’s national flag. The presentation gave the Colombian rider a place in the team’s 2027 lineup alongside French veteran Johann Zarco.

Alonso joins LCR as Honda confirms its 2027 lineup
Team director Lucio Cecchinello welcomed Alonso and said LCR looked forward to building a strong future with him. Alonso has described his move to Honda as a childhood dream, expressing pride in joining the manufacturer’s racing program.
Alonso will ride for LCR, Honda’s satellite team, rather than its factory outfit, Honda HRC Castrol. Brazilian rider Diogo Moreira will move to the factory team to partner Fabio Quartararo, while Zarco continues with LCR.
MotoGP will also introduce major technical changes in 2027, including a switch from 1,000cc to 850cc engines. Alonso will therefore enter the premier class as teams prepare for a new generation of motorcycles.
From Moto3 champion to the premier class
Born in Madrid on April 25, 2006, Alonso holds Spanish and Colombian nationality and represents Colombia in international competition. He won the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2021 before making occasional World Championship appearances that year and in 2022.
His first full Moto3 World Championship season came in 2023, when he finished third overall. He won the title in 2024 after taking 14 race victories that season.
Across Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso has recorded 20 wins and 32 podium finishes in four seasons of full-time World Championship competition, according to MotoGP’s announcement of his move to LCR. He stepped up to Moto2 with the Aspar Team in 2025 and won his first race in the category that year.
Four podiums in a disrupted 2026 season
Alonso’s second Moto2 season has included four podium finishes, but crashes have interrupted his campaign. He won the Dutch Grand Prix at Assen on June 28, beating Manuel Gonzalez by just 0.024 seconds. He also finished on the podium in Brazil, Aragon, and Austria.
At the German Grand Prix in July, Alonso crashed while running fourth with seven laps remaining. He later returned to the podium in the following rounds, but a more serious incident ended his Indonesian Grand Prix on Oct. 11.
Alonso started third at Mandalika and was involved in a first-corner crash with several riders. Contact from teammate Daniel Holgado sent Alonso into a highside, prompting officials to stop the race. Holgado later apologized and said he took full responsibility for the mistake.
The CFMoto Aspar Team reported that Alonso suffered a pulmonary contusion, or lung bruise, and was taken to hospital. Doctors ruled out other injuries, according to the team. Alonso could not take part in the restart and was classified as a nonfinisher.
He did start the season-opening Thai Grand Prix, contrary to some reports that he missed the event. A crash ended his race in a contest interrupted by multiple red flags. Indonesia was the race he missed after his injury.
Before the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island, scheduled for Oct. 23-25, Alonso had 166 points. Holgado had 170, while Gonzalez led the standings with 265.5 points.
Valencia test will offer Alonso his first MotoGP ride
Alonso will get his first opportunity to ride Honda’s MotoGP machinery at the post-season Valencia test in November, according to Honda’s July announcement. The session will give him an initial introduction to the motorcycle before his first full premier-class season in 2027.
The test will also provide an early look at the transition to the 850cc regulations that will reshape MotoGP next season. Alonso will arrive with a world title from Moto3 and experience racing for podiums in Moto2, but the Valencia outing will mark the start of his work in the new category.
His first MotoGP race season begins in 2027 with LCR, placing a Colombian representative back on the grid after Yonny Hernández’s last MotoGP season in 2016.
