Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams didn’t have much of an impact in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, and spoke about his lack of involvement after the game.
Williams rushed for 50 yards on 10 carries in the loss, catching three passes for 17 more yards. He only got one touch in the third quarter, a rush for no gain, and didn’t feature again until 7 minutes remained on the clock. The Rams went on to lose the game after a last-second field goal from Chad Ryland—who converted all six of his attempts—flew through the sticks.
Following the game, Williams didn’t hold back in talking about his notable time on the bench.
“Can’t tell you, bro,” Williams said on why the Rams couldn’t sustain their energy throughout the game. “Probably because I’m not out there.”
Why Is Kyren Williams Getting Less Reps?
Williams is a fantastic back, as his five yards per carry on Sunday and efficient run game throughout the season have shown, but the Rams also have to find a spot for Blake Corum, who is having a great season in his own right.
Corum rushed for 42 yards on nine carries in Sunday’s loss, and logged a receiving touchdown with 18 yards on two receptions. Corum has 50 or more yards in four of his six games this season, and has a touchdown in consecutive games after his score against the Cardinals.
With how the third-year running back is performing, it’s only natural that he’s getting as much time as he is with the team.
What is Going Wrong For the Rams?
The Rams’ run game clearly isn’t the issue, but plenty of other factors have taken their toll on the team to contribute to their slow start.
A Week 1 injury to Myles Garrett sent the team off the rails early, and their recent placekicking struggles have cost them two games now. Harrison Mevis missed both of his field goal attempts in a 37-34 loss to the Bills last Monday before the team waived him, and Blake Grupe, who replaced Mevis, left Sunday’s game in the first quarter—steering the Rams away from kicking field goals and extra points throughout the game.
The Rams still have a high-powered offense, averaging the third-most yards per game in the league so far this season, so if they can buff out some minor issues they still have more than enough time to make their way into the playoff picture.
