Iowa launches $4.9m project to reclaim 150 acres of abandoned coal mines

The environmental impact of coal mining does not end immediately when the last piece of coal is extracted. Even when coal mining on a land has ended, the land needs repair because there may still be steep slopes, deep pits filled with water, exposed soil and areas where the soil has become too acidic for plants to grow.

This damage left behind after mining can impact not only the land but also the surrounding communities. In Iowa, a new $4.9 million reclamation project was announced by the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, on the 20th of October, 2026.The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has begun construction on four new abandoned mine land reclamation projects covering approximately 150 acres in Mahaska and Marion counties. These new projects are in addition to the significant AML (Abandoned mine land) work already underway in southern Iowa, reflecting a commitment to the larger reclamation project, with Secretary Naig further stating that “Abandoned mine reclamation is an important part of our work to improve water quality and soil health.

What does Iowa's new reclamation project mean?

For over four decades, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has been actively reclaiming land in parts of southern Iowa and has made significant progress, but they are spearheaded to do more important work with these newer projects in the future. The department has so far reclaimed 7,195 acres, with a total investment of nearly $117 million. In addition to the four new projects, nine other reclamation projects are under construction, while 21 more sites are in various stages of planning and design.

The programme is federally funded through the US Department of the Interior's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, with approximately $8.44 million allocated to Iowa this year to support its ongoing work. A previous project in Wapello County offers an example of what this restoration can achieve, as the 34.6-acre BOS reclamation project improved water quality in Bear Creek, treated nearly 5 million gallons of acidic impounded water and returned formerly mined land to safe clean agricultural use.

The department's commendable work is also evident in the project which also received the 2026 Interior States Region Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Award.

Why do continue to affect the environment?

Coal mining, particularly surface mining, involves removing the soil and rock covering coal deposits to reach the material underneath. Once mining operations end, the land can be left with steep embankments, exposed rock, deep pits and disturbed soil that may not support vegetation easily.

In Iowa, these abandoned sites can also contain acidic soils and water-filled pits, creating environmental and safety concerns long after mining has stopped.

According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, the state has approximately 13,000 acres of abandoned surface coal mines, primarily across southern and southeast Iowa. These sites can pose challenges for the surrounding landscape, particularly when exposed soil is vulnerable to erosion or when rainfall carries sediment into nearby streams.

One of the concerns associated with abandoned coal mines is the possibility of acidic mine drainage. This can occur when certain minerals in exposed rocks react with air and water, producing acidity that can dissolve and carry metals into surrounding water bodies. Depending on the conditions at a particular site, this can affect water quality and harm aquatic organisms.Soil erosion presents another challenge. When the ground has been disturbed and vegetation is unable to establish itself, rainfall can wash loose soil into streams and other waterways.

Over time, sediment can affect aquatic habitats, while acidic drainage can introduce additional pollutants. Although not every abandoned mine produces acidic drainage, these risks explain why reclaiming old mining sites involves more than simply clearing the land or covering it with grass.Reclaiming abandoned coal mines is not simply about making a damaged landscape look green again. It involves addressing the underlying problems affecting soil, water and the safety of the land, while creating conditions that allow the surrounding environment to recover. Iowa's latest investment highlights how the work of restoring a landscape can continue long after mining operations have ended, helping return once damaged land to a more productive and environmentally sustainable use.
