SHILLONG, OCT 16: Ranikor MLA and MDC Pius Marwein schooled KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana and Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh over his party affiliation, asserting that the district council has no Tenth Schedule or anti-defection law.
Marwein, one of eight former UDP MLAs who recently joined the BJP, was reacting to Kharjana’s remark that he had not informed whether he is a UDP or BJP MDC.
“I condemn the statement of the chairman saying MLA BJP and MDC UDP. Today inside the House, I also condemned the CEM for using the same words,” Marwein said after the council’s winter session on Thursday.
He said there is no legal bar on switching parties in the council.
“Till today, there is no Tenth Schedule in the district council, there is no anti-defection law, meaning we can go to any party. If he wants that there should be, then he should first legislate such a law, then we will inform them,” he said.
Stating that his affiliation is clear, Marwein said, “I have joined the BJP. I am an elected MLA and MDC, so I am BJP and I continue to be BJP in the council as well.”
He also cited past precedents.
“If you look at previous terms, there were MDCs who switched parties every few months, even every year, within a single five-year tenure. They should consider those precedents. There is no anti-defection law in the council. Let them bring a legislation first, then we will see,” he added.
