Rio Ngumoha explains Liverpool impact at Brentford and growing right-wing confidence
Rio Ngumoha entered a game Liverpool were still chasing and left with another experience to build on. Introduced in the 52nd minute with his side trailing Brentford, the teenager helped see out an afternoon that ended in a 2-1 victory and offered further evidence of his growing involvement.
Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak supplied the goals that overturned the deficit against the 10-man hosts. Ngumoha’s reflections afterwards focused on the attitude required to enter a difficult match, contribute immediately and make the most of whatever role is available.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, he also explained how playing on the right has become a more natural part of his game. For Liverpool, that development broadens the options offered by a youngster already learning to move between starting appearances and contributions from the bench.

Rio Ngumoha embraces demands of Brentford comeback
There was little opportunity for Ngumoha to ease himself into the contest at Gtech Community Stadium. Liverpool needed a response, and the scoreline gave every attacking change an immediate purpose.
“For everyone watching, it was very up and down,” he said.
“But these games you kind of live for really and to get the three points just shows how strong the mentality is in the team.”
His comments reflected satisfaction with the outcome, but also an understanding that being introduced as a substitute requires its own preparation. The opportunity may arrive midway through a match, yet the readiness to influence it has to come beforehand.
“It’s definitely tough but I think if you just have come into the game in the right mind frame, thinking I can impact the game, then you can probably do whatever.”
Liverpool substitute focuses on helping team
Ngumoha made no attempt to claim the comeback as his own. Munoz and Isak delivered the decisive finishes, while his account centred on meeting the demands of the occasion.
“So like today, I knew the game was going to be tough, Brentford away is never easy, and I just wanted to get stuck in and help the team get the win, and thankfully we did that.”
That is a useful outlook for a young player whose opportunities will not always arrive in the same form. Starting a match offers time to establish a rhythm; coming on with the team behind demands a more immediate response.
The Brentford appearance was Ngumoha’s eighth of the season. Each outing brings a different test, and this one required him to contribute while Liverpool were under pressure to turn possession and numerical advantage into a result.
Right-wing role expands attacking options
Ngumoha again operated on the right, a position in which he feels increasingly comfortable.
“I think I’ve got a lot better on the right from the Newcastle game to now,” he explained. “I think I’m understanding more as well. I think definitely going away with England as well helped me a lot.”
His assessment suggests that the change involves more than simply moving across the pitch. Growing understanding matters alongside confidence, particularly when a player is learning how to contribute from different starting positions.
“I like playing on both sides now as well and it gives me another tool in the toolbox, so it’s good.”
For Andoni Iraola, that flexibility provides another consideration when selecting his attack or making changes during games. For Ngumoha, it creates another way to earn involvement without depending on one position becoming available.
Young Liverpool trio aim to maintain progress
Ngumoha had started the Champions League victory at LASK alongside Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas. All three began on the bench at Brentford, and all eventually entered the match.
That shift from European starters to Premier League substitutes illustrates the varied opportunities available within a busy schedule.
“I think the game schedule is so many games and I think whatever opportunities – whether it’s starting, coming on – we just have to take it,” Ngumoha said.
“All of us are doing that – me, Trey, Koumas – so we’ve just got to keep going and keep staying on the right track.”
His ambition is expressed in practical terms: be ready, contribute and continue improving. At Brentford, the reward was three points. Beyond that result, Ngumoha’s growing comfort in different roles gives him something valuable to carry into his next opportunity.
