Three men have been arrested over the murder of Jubo Mohila League leader Dalia Akter, 50, at her flat in South Keraniganj, with police saying they slit her throat after she recognised them during a burglary.
The arrestees are Md Ashik, 23, from Chanderchar; Md Alamgir Hossain, 36, from Chargulugulia; and Md Anik, 19, from Madhyapara, all in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.
Dhaka Additional Superintendent of Police Tarikul Islam disclosed the details at a press briefing at South Keraniganj Police Station today (25 October).
Dalia was killed with a sharp weapon sometime before 6am on Friday (23 October) at her third-floor flat in Sweden Plaza, in the Rasulpur Bazar area of South Keraniganj, he said.
The attackers fled the scene, and her body was later recovered after locals informed police.
Following the murder, police collected CCTV footage from the surrounding area and used intelligence and information technology to identify the suspects.
Police first arrested Anik during a raid in Balurchar in Sirajdikhan. Based on information obtained from him, police later arrested Ashik and Alamgir in another operation in the Abdullahpur Bazar area of South Keraniganj.
According to Tarikul Islam, the suspects admitted their involvement in the murder during preliminary interrogation.
The three men knew the victim and were aware that she usually left her front door open in the morning for her domestic worker. Taking advantage of this, they entered her flat through the roof of an adjacent building on the day of the incident, intending to steal, the police official said.
Dalia noticed them, shouted and recognised the intruders. Fearing they would be caught, the suspects stabbed her with a sharp weapon and slit her throat, he added.
Ashik and Alamgir then escaped through the roof, while Anik wore a burqa and left through the main door to avoid suspicion.
The suspects left the burqa and shoes at Balu Field while fleeing. Police later recovered the items based on information provided by Anik following his arrest, the additional superintendent of police said.
Dalia's daughter has filed a murder case with South Keraniganj Police Station. The three men have been shown arrested in the case and produced before a court, while the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
