The Milwaukee Brewers have spent decades trying to get back to baseball's biggest stage, enduring playoff disappointments and near misses since their first World Series appearance in 1982.
That wait has finally ended in 2026, with Milwaukee securing the National League pennant after a dominant postseason performance that followed the most successful regular season in franchise history.
Brewers break record and shock the entire MLB
Under manager Pat Murphy, the Brewers won 103 games during the regular season before completing a four-game sweep in the National League Championship Series.
Their return to the Fall Classic marks a significant achievement for a franchise that has established itself as a consistent postseason contender without managing to secure baseball's ultimate prize.
Milwaukee has now reached the World Series twice, although its first appearance ended in a defeat that still resonates more than four decades later.
When did Milwaukee Brewers last play in the World Series?
Milwaukee's only previous World Series appearance came in 1982, when the Brewers were members of the American League and possessed one of baseball's most dangerous lineups.
That team, famously nicknamed "Harvey's Wallbangers" after manager Harvey Kuenn, featured future Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Paul Molitor, alongside offensive standout Cecil Cooper.
The Brewers finished the regular season with a 95-67 record, scoring 891 runs before defeating the California Angels in the American League Championship Series.
Their reward was a World Series meeting with the St. Louis Cardinals, who pushed Milwaukee into a fiercely contested seven-game championship showdown.
Milwaukee appeared close to securing its first title after taking a 3-2 series lead, but St. Louis recovered to win the final two games.
The Cardinals claimed Game 7 by a 6-3 score, leaving the Brewers one victory short of becoming world champions.
How Milwaukee finally returned to World Series in 2026
The years following that defeat brought several opportunities for Milwaukee to challenge for another pennant, although none resulted in a World Series appearance until 2026.
The Brewers reached the National League Championship Series in 2011, losing to St. Louis in six games, before another opportunity slipped away against the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games in 2018.
More recently, Milwaukee suffered a four-game NLCS sweep in 2025, despite finishing the regular season with 97 victories.
However, the Brewers responded impressively in 2026, improving their record to 103-59 and completing an unbeaten NLCS to secure their first National League pennant.
The achievement also means Milwaukee has reached the World Series representing both leagues, having moved from the American League to the National League in 1998.
Have the Milwaukee Brewers ever won World Series?
Despite reaching the championship series in 1982 and 2026, Milwaukee has never won a World Series title.
The franchise originally entered Major League Baseball as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 before relocating to Milwaukee the following year.
Its 2026 breakthrough offers another chance to change that history and establish a new standard for one of baseball's longest-established franchises without a championship.
The 1982 team remains celebrated in Milwaukee, but Murphy's current roster now has an opportunity to accomplish something even that legendary lineup could not.
After 44 years of waiting, the Brewers are no longer chasing another World Series appearance. They are chasing their first World Series championship.
