Nigeria has won the bid to host the 2028 ITTF Africa Championships after securing the support of delegates at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ITTF Africa held in Tangier, Morocco.
The West African nation emerged victorious ahead of Tunisia in a closely contested race for the hosting rights of Africa’s premier table tennis tournament. Nigeria’s proven track record in organising major international competitions and its reputation for efficient event management played a significant role in swaying delegates in its favour.
Following presentations by both bidding nations, delegates agreed to determine the host through a vote. Of the 38 certified votes cast, comprising 31 delegates present at the AGM and seven authorised proxies, Nigeria secured 23 votes, while Tunisia received 15, handing the hosting rights to Nigeria.
The AGM also confirmed hosts for several continental events in 2027 and 2028. In 2027, Libya will host the Africa Cup, Algeria the African Championships, Botswana the Youth Championships, and Nigeria the African Para Championships. For 2028, Nigeria will host the African Championships, Rwanda the Youth Championships, and Egypt the Para Championships. The host nation for the 2028 Africa Cup is yet to be announced.
Reacting to the outcome, President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Adesoji Tayo, expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in Nigeria by the continental body and its member associations. He pledged that the country would deliver a world-class tournament in Lagos.
Tayo described the support received from delegates as overwhelming and assured the African table tennis community of a memorable championship.
“We want to thank all the delegates for placing their trust in Nigeria to host both the 2028 African Championships and the 2027 African Para Championships,” he said. “As experienced organisers of major international table tennis events, we are committed to delivering a seamless and successful tournament. Lagos will once again welcome the continent’s finest players, and we assure all visitors that Nigeria will be the place to be in 2028.”
He added that the championships would further strengthen Nigeria’s position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for international table tennis competitions while providing an unforgettable experience for athletes, officials, and fans alike.
