ARK Invest projects Tesla shares could reach $4,400 in 2031 under a model assuming approximately $225 billion in cumulative AI infrastructure spending. The forecast ties future value to robotaxi services and humanoid robots.
Key Takeaways
- ARK expects robotaxis to contribute 80% of Tesla’s enterprise value in 2031.
- Its $4,400 target is about 1,039% above the Oct. 21 close.
- The model incorporates share dilution from Musk’s stock-based compensation.
AI Spending Assumptions Support the $4,400 Tesla Forecast
Cumulative AI infrastructure spending at Tesla would rise from approximately $7 billion at the end of 2025 to $225 billion by the end of 2031 under ARK Invest’s updated Tesla valuation, published Oct. 19. Within the model, higher AI investment improves Optimus productivity. This links computing expenditure to the projected economic output of humanoid robots.
ARK, led by CEO Cathie Wood, stated:
“ARK’s price target for Tesla in 2031 is ~$4,400 per share.”
Shares of Tesla Inc. (Nasdaq: TSLA) closed Oct. 21 at $386.47, up 3.41%, placing ARK’s target approximately 1,039% above that price.
Infrastructure plans include the Tesla-SpaceX Terafab chip project, with an initial $16.8 billion construction commitment in Grimes County, Texas. The planned chips would support autonomous vehicles, robots, and SpaceX’s proposed orbital data centers.
Robotaxis and Optimus Drive the Revenue Projections
Under the illustrative base case, ARK assumes approximately 8.1 million robotaxis, $753 billion in annual ride-hailing net revenue, and $212 billion in Optimus revenue by 2031. Robotaxis would account for approximately 80% of enterprise value, a measure incorporating equity and net debt. The scenario also assumes approximately 1 million Optimus robots sold externally on a cumulative basis by 2031.
At equal utilization rates, ARK estimates Tesla’s operating costs per mile could be approximately 40% below those of Waymo’s next-generation robotaxi. Its analysis links the advantage to vertical integration and camera-based autonomous driving. Consumer-owned vehicles could expand the fleet, while lower fares could broaden demand beyond current ride-hailing users.
These projections align with CEO Elon Musk’s expectations for Optimus and Cybercab. In an Oct. 18 X post, Musk identified the humanoid robot and purpose-built driverless vehicle as the sources of most of Tesla’s future value.
Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries and 13.7 gigawatt-hours of storage deployments for the third quarter in its Oct. 2 announcement. It also listed production of 464,391 vehicles. Model 3 and Model Y vehicles accounted for 478,237 deliveries, while other models contributed 8,295. The figures provide an operating baseline for comparison with ARK’s projections.
Dilution and Deployment Risks Shape the Valuation
Bear and bull estimates of approximately $3,300 and $5,000 per share correspond to the simulation’s 25th and 75th percentiles. These are positions within a distribution of modeled outcomes, rather than minimum and maximum prices. Results below the bear estimate and above the bull estimate remain possible.
Monte Carlo simulation tests combinations of assumptions across 32 independent inputs. Those inputs determine projected operations and share valuations. Share count also affects the value attributable to each investor’s equity ownership stake. ARK assumes Musk’s stock-based compensation vests within the forecast period, incorporating the resulting dilution into its valuation.
A possible SpaceX combination receives separate consideration from ARK’s standalone Tesla model, following earlier Tesla-SpaceX merger speculation. Investor Steve Eisman questioned such a deal’s appeal for SpaceX shareholders during a June 8 CNBC interview.
Musk said during SpaceX’s Oct. 20 earnings call that both companies have formed special committees to discuss a merger, calling a combination a “good idea.” He added that he will stay out of those talks as a conflicted party. Regulatory delays and slower robotaxi expansion remain risks to ARK’s forecast. The firm also identifies Musk’s sudden departure, natural disasters, and a pandemic as events that could disrupt the deployment assumptions.
