Imphal, Oct 20: The Kuki Youth Organization (KYO), Leimakhong Block, has condemned the alleged killing of a Kuki-Zo civilian by suspected NSCN-IM cadres in the Moulding village area of Manipur’s Kangpokpi district. The incident has renewed concerns over civilian safety and the withdrawal of security deployments from the region.
According to a press statement issued by the organization on Tuesday, two Kuki-Zo civilians from Moulding village were fired upon by suspected NSCN-IM cadres on Tuesday morning while collecting bamboo shoots in a nearby forest.
One of the victims, identified as Paolen, was killed in the shooting. The second civilian survived and managed to escape to the village, the statement said.
The KYO described the incident as another reminder of the continuing insecurity faced by civilians in the area. It also referred to an earlier unresolved killing involving a 71-year-old Kuki man who was allegedly captured and beaten to death.
The organization expressed concern over the lack of progress in investigations into previous civilian killings and questioned the effectiveness of existing security arrangements.
The youth body identified the dismantling of village volunteer mechanisms and the withdrawal of security force deployments from Leimakhong as key factors that, it said, had increased the vulnerability of residents.
“Why is this happening? Why does the government’s failure to protect our people continue? How many more innocent lives must be lost before the authorities recognize the gravity of this crisis?” the organization asked in its statement.
The KYO demanded the immediate restoration of adequate security cover in Leimakhong and other vulnerable areas. It also called for thorough and impartial investigations into both killings and accountability for those responsible.
Warning that continued inaction could further undermine public confidence in the state’s ability to protect civilians, the organization urged the government to take immediate steps to prevent further violence.
