An Auditor General of Pakistan report has identified financial irregularities totaling Rs. 16.94 billion in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Minerals Department, including losses linked to illegal mining and unpaid dues.
Illegal mining accounted for Rs. 8 billion in losses to the province, making it the largest amount among the findings detailed in the report.
The audit also flagged Rs. 4.31 billion in outstanding payments that authorities had failed to recover from defaulting contractors. Separately, uncollected dues from mineral leaseholders amounted to Rs. 810 million.
Another Rs. 580 million in losses was attributed to joint venture profits that had not been deposited. The report further identified a Rs. 140 million loss from charging excessively low rents for government land.
The findings point to failures in collecting payments owed to the province, alongside revenue losses from unauthorized extraction and the use of public property.
The amounts detailed in these findings form part of the overall Rs. 16.94 billion flagged by the audit. The report’s classification of these sums as irregularities does not, by itself, establish that the entire amount was stolen or embezzled.
