Kanniyakumari district monitoring officer Prashant M Wadnere inspected the water levels at Pechiparai and Perunchani dams in the district on Saturday. Kanniyakumari Collector M. Prathap was also present during the inspections.
The inspection comes amid a steady rise in water levels at the major reservoirs following the Northeast monsoon rains over the past few days.
Mr. Wadnere said that the district administration has taken several precautionary measures to tackle the Northeast monsoon. He added that a detailed assessment was conducted on the terrain of the district, rainfall data, the condition of water bodies and preparedness of the departmental officers to deal with the monsoon related emergencies. Particularly, flood prone areas have been identified and officials have been instructed to pay special attention to these locations and undertake necessary precautionary measures
Officials of the Water Resource Department are closely monitoring the inflow of water in Pechiparai, Perunchani and Chittar I&II dams in the district. The department has also been instructed to release the surplus water depending on the inflow of water, he noted.
Mr. Wadnere and Mr. Prathap also held discussions with departmental officials regarding the preparations for the northeast monsoon.
Earlier, the Collector inspected the fishing harbour at Chinna Muttom. During the inspection, he instructed the officials to clear blockages in the drainage channels beneath the roads to prevent rainwater from accumulating within the harbour complex. The concerned authorities were instructed to take steps to renovate drainage channels in the areas prone to waterlogging.
He further stressed on the need to completely prohibit the use of plastics, as plastic waste clogs drainage channels and obstructs the free flow of rainwater.
