These hyaluronic acid serums are our secret to smooth, supple skin

You’ve seen it before — the skincare commercial where someone joyfully splashes water on their face, usually right before the screen flashes the words “hyaluronic acid” in bold.

That signature water imagery? It’s not just for show. It perfectly captures what the best hyaluronic acid serums are designed to do: hydrate, plump and refresh your skin like a tall glass of water for your face.

So, what is hyaluronic acid, really? Despite the slightly intimidating name, it’s not a harsh chemical. In fact, it’s a naturally occurring substance found in your skin, joints and eyes. As a powerful humectant, hyaluronic acid draws moisture from the environment and locks it into your skin — making it an essential ingredient in many moisturizers, serums and even lip balms. The result? Smooth, supple skin that looks healthier and more hydrated.

Whether you’re wondering how to use hyaluronic acid, whether hyaluronic acid causes acne, or how it compares to niacinamide, there’s no denying the ingredient’s versatility. It’s loved by dermatologists and skincare lovers alike, and the benefits of hyaluronic acid go far beyond hydration (think: improved skin texture, minimized fine lines and even soothing support for sensitive or acne-prone skin).

To help you navigate the best options on the market, we’ve rounded up top-rated products — from the best overall hyaluronic acid serum to a gentle lip balm, nighttime serum and more. No matter your skin type or concern, there’s a hyaluronic acid solution for you.

“Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our skin that helps keep it moisturized and plump,” Rachel Nazarian, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in NYC, told the New York Post. “Because of its ability to draw and hold water, it’s referred to as a ‘humectant moisturizer’ — and keeps skin moisturized throughout the day, [minimizing] the appearance of fine lines and superficial wrinkles.”

Ahead, find the alluring, barrier-repairing serums, face masks, lip balms, and lotions that’ll bring your skin back to life (when used consistently, that is). Once you begin dousing your face and body with HA, you’ll be in for a dewy, glowing-from-within treat.

Best Overall: Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum

The Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum is an incredibly moisturizing, humectant-forward serum that wears many hats in its formulation. For one, it helps minimize the look of fine lines, helps reverse and alleviate the impact of my dry, flaky skin and essentially floods my skin with nourishment. It’s the crème de la crème of hyaluronic acid serums, namely for its ability to mask away dullness and conquer even the driest of regions on the face.

Leave it to me — I’ve reviewed all of Drunk Elephant and the brand goes beyond its photo-worthy matte white lotions and potions with a fun, neon cap. The magic is what lies inside and, in this case, it’s hydration.

Drunk Elephant’s B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum is packed with pineapple ceramides and provitamin B5, the latter an additional humectant that helps improve skin barrier function. And, don’t let the fruity notes in the ingredients worry you if your skin is sensitive; it holds virtually zero fragrance.

Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Pineapple ceramide, Provitamin B5 | Size: 1.69 ounces | Pairs well with: Drunk Elephant Lala Retro Whipped Cream ($64)

Best Drugstore: The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum is a popular, lightweight serum designed to hydrate and replenish the skin. With a 2% concentration, this serum provides a balanced level of hydration without overwhelming the skin, fitting the bill as one of the best hyaluronic acid serums we tested. Its gentle formula makes it suitable for all skin types.

The addition of Vitamin B5 (panthenol) enhances the skin’s barrier function, promoting healing and reducing irritation. This combination of ingredients makes it a great option for people looking to address dryness, and dehydration and improve overall skin texture, remaining on a budget all the while.

“I love The Ordinary for its straightforward and effective ingredient list,” Holly J Coley, commerce deputy editor, shared. “My skin is incredibly dry — like, so dry that I use a facial oil and moisturizer or a regular basis. I found that this hyaluronic acid made it so that I didn’t have to put layer after layer of other products on, which was huge.”

She applied it to a damp face (typically after her shower) and was happy to notice it absorbed in about a minute. “It left my skin dewy, soft, and with a noticeable bounce,” she added.

One of the key benefits of this serum is its ability to provide immediate hydration, leaving the skin feeling smooth and soft. It works by replenishing moisture in the skin’s outer layers, preventing water loss and improving elasticity. The lightweight, non-greasy texture absorbs quickly, making it easy to layer with other skincare products, such as moisturizers and sunscreens. Since it doesn’t leave a sticky or heavy residue, it’s ideal for both daytime and nighttime use.

Despite its simplicity, The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum stands out for its efficacy and affordability. The brand is known for offering high-quality, science-backed products at accessible price points, and this serum is no exception. Better yet, it doesn’t contain any unnecessary fillers or fragrances, making it a great option for those with sensitive skin or anyone looking for a no-frills approach to skincare.

Best for Dry, Flaky Skin: Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5%

The Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% doesn’t only hydrate but provides multi-level moisture. In its formulation, it blends four different forms of hyaluronic acid, each one targeting different layers of the skin for maximum effectiveness.

The higher 5% concentration delivers a more potent dose of hydration than the rest of the industry’s litter, making it a powerful option for addressing dryness and dehydration.

“I’ve been using the Naturium Quadruple Hyaluronic Acid Serum 5% for a bit now, and I’m actually impressed with the results,” Kendall Cornish, former commerce writer/editor, shared. “The gel-like texture absorbs quickly into my (seriously dehydrated) skin, leaving it feeling plump, but without any sticky residue.”

If Naturium’s hyaluronic acid serum wasn’t enough of an overachiever, it also includes vitamin B5 (panthenol), which helps to soothe and support the skin’s natural barrier. This makes the serum suitable for a wide range of skin types, including sensitive and irritated skin.

To top if off, this serum holds a lightweight, non-greasy texture that absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving a refreshed, soft feel without any residue; this makes it seamless to layer with other skincare products in your regimen.

The hyaluronic acid serum is also formulated without parabens, sulfates or artificial fragrances, making it a clean and gentle option for those who are mindful of ingredient transparency. Its packaging features a sleek, air-tight pump bottle that helps preserve the potency of the active ingredients while making it easy to dispense the right amount of product.

Size: 1 ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin B5, Glycerin | Pairs well with: Naturium Dew-Glow Moisturizer SPF 50 ($22)

Best for Oily Skin: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum

The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum is an excellent choice for oily skin due to its lightweight, non-comedogenic formula, which hydrates without clogging pores. Oily skin can sometimes become dehydrated, leading to an overproduction of oil as the skin compensates for the lack of moisture. With a well-designed formulation that keeps hyaluronic acid as the mainstay ingredient, it ensures the skin stays hydrated throughout the day without feeling greasy or heavy. It also balances oil production, preventing the skin from becoming excessively oily or dry.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Serum has a gel-like consistency that absorbs quickly into the skin, providing a smooth, refreshed feel without leaving a residue. This makes it ideal for daily use, even under makeup, as it creates a hydrated yet matte surface.

“The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum has been a really lovely addition to my (admittedly somewhat sparse) skincare routine,” Angela Tricarico, commerce streaming reporter, shared. “I started using it in tandem with the Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Gel Cream and have seen a notable difference in my skin, which tends to be drier in the winter months.”

What’s more, the parts of Tricarico’s skin that are normally the driest are nice and soft, and her t-zone has been less oily since she started using this serum daily.

Neutrogena’s hyaluronic acid serum is designed to deliver long-lasting moisture, ensuring that the skin remains balanced and comfortable without triggering breakouts or excessive shine. It supports skin barrier function without exacerbating oiliness, and you’ll also appreciate how it’s enriched with glycerin, which helps retain water within the skin, while also offering antioxidant properties to protect the skin from environmental stressors. This makes the serum effective for maintaining skin health and preventing irritation or inflammation that can often occur in oily, and even acne-prone, skin.

Size: 1 ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin B5, Glycerin | Pairs well with: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Gel Cream ($23)

Best for Sensitive Skin: Three Ships Dew Drops Mushroom + Kakadu Plum + Hyaluronic Acid Serum

The Three Ships Dew Drops Mushroom + Kakadu Plum + Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a lovely choice for sensitive skin due to its carefully selected, soothing ingredients designed to calm and hydrate without causing irritation. It’s distinctive for its inclusion of Tremella extract — a hyaluronic acid alternative — that has the potential to penetrate the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin, that is) deeper because of its smaller particle size compared to traditional hyaluronic acid.

Mushroom extract, one of the key ingredients, marries with Tremella extract to deliver powerful anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation, which are common concerns for sensitive skin types. This makes the serum ideal for individuals who experience reactive skin or conditions like rosacea or eczema, as it helps restore balance without exacerbating sensitivity.

In addition to mushroom extract, the serum also contains Kakadu plum, which is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. As we know, vitamin C is a superstar for its brightening effects and, in this formula, Kakadu plum helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors while promoting a more even complexion

“I’m majorly impressed by the results and quality of this serum and its all-natural ingredients,” Meaghan Seward, senior strategist of commerce audience optimization and discovery, shared. “I started testing this product just when my skin needed it most; I was just getting over a bad cold, and the cold of the winter was really starting to set in in December. My skin absorbed all the hydration it so desperately needed, leaving it clear, plump and rejuvenated.”

The best part, per Seward, is how well this serum layers with other products in her routine. “At first, I noticed a slight smell from the mushroom extract, but given that it’s natural rather than artificial fragrance, this really didn’t bother my sensitive skin,” she shared. “After all, these ingredients allow for the product to be 100% vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and pregnancy safe. It’s worth noting that it also contains vitamin C to help brighten skin tone, but should always be supported with SPF to protect your skin.”

The lightweight, non-greasy texture of this serum ensures it absorbs quickly without leaving a heavy residue, making it ideal for sensitive skin that is prone to feeling overwhelmed by thicker formulations. Together, these ingredients work synergistically to hydrate, protect and calm, making it a great addition to a sensitive skincare routine.

Size: 1 ounce | Key ingredients: Tremella extract (hyaluronic acid alternative), Kakadu plum, Red algae extract | Pairs well with: Three Ships Restore Ceramides + Gotu Kola Barrier Repair Cream ($37)

Best for Acne: Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum

The Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum serves those with acne-prone skin due to its lightweight, noncomedogenic formula that delivers effective hydration without clogging pores. As imagined, one of the key challenges for individuals with acne is maintaining proper hydration while avoiding products that may contribute to breakouts or excess oil production. Unlike heavier creams or oils that can exacerbate acne by trapping bacteria or oil in the pores, the serum absorbs quickly and leaves the skin feeling refreshed and plump without any greasy residue. No congested skin here.

“If you’re looking for a kicked-up hyaluronic acid formula, Good Molecules is a great choice,” Miska Salemann, commerce reporter, shared. “It incorporates two forms of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights, allowing it to penetrate the skin further for a deeper, total hydration. My favorite part about this formula is that it doesn’t require long-term use to start noticing results; your skin starts looking and feeling more hydrated right away.”

Given that this is a stronger formula, Salemann was slightly nervous there would be some stinging when she applied it, but she didn’t notice anything of the sort. “It went on quite gently and my skin seems softer, brighter, more subtle and plumped in the right places,” she added. “With time, I’d expect it would help smooth out some fine lines, too.”

Besides its ability to hydrate, the serum also helps to balance the skin’s moisture levels, which is crucial for acne management. Often, acne treatments like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can dry out the skin, leading to an imbalance where the skin compensates by producing even more oil. This can create a cycle that worsens acne. As a helpful agent, the Good Molecules Hyaluronic Acid Serum can break this cycle by replenishing moisture without triggering an overproduction of oil because of its inclusion of hyaluronic acid and lightweight properties.

The Good Molecules serum boasts a formula that’s void of harsh additives like parabens, sulfates or artificial fragrances, which can irritate sensitive, acne-prone skin. It also features a non-greasy formula that plumps at the same time which may mitigate the appearance of subtle acne scars due to its water-drenched aftereffect. ;

Size: 1 ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin | Pairs well with: Good Molecules Lightweight Daily Moisturizer ($12)

Best for Redness: La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum

After reviewing the lion’s share of La Roche-Posay, I can attest that its Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a sent-from-above blessing for skin that needs some TLC. Hyaluronic acid aside, this serum contains vitamin B5 (panthenol), which has healing and anti-inflammatory properties that help to strengthen the skin’s barrier, reduce irritation and accelerate the skin’s natural repair process. In short, it’s a dreamboat for redness.

My skin is mostly dry and sensitive. I’m sometimes prone to redness near the apples of my cheeks. To prevent them from *actually* turning Snow White-apple red, I turn to La Roche-Posay’s nurturing formula that holds a one-of-a-kind cooling effect. The synergistic duo of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 works to restore moisture, soothe and calm redness caused by environmental stressors or underlying skin conditions like rosacea or eczema.

Big picture thinking now: La Roche-Posay’s commitment to using minimalist approach with dermatologically tested ingredients is crucial for those with sensitive or redness-prone skin. The serum is free from harsh fragrances, parabens and other potential irritants. I love how it’s lightweight it feels. All the while, it visibly reduces redness and has noticeably improved my overall skin tone. It’s exceptional if you’re craving a more even, calm, healthier complexion.

Size: 1.01 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin B5 | Pairs well with: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer ($24)

Best for Nighttime: CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Dermatologists love it, and we do, too. The CeraVe Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing serum designed to provide deep hydration and support the skin’s natural moisture barrier. It’s ideal for those with dry or dehydrated skin, and it works well for all skin types.

“I have acne-prone combination skin and Cerave is one of the few brands that has had my back over the years,” Salemann said. “The Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum is super gentle and works wonders. Even a small amount goes a long way for hydration.”

With her skin being dry in the winter, applying this serum helps bring it back to life. “My face feels baby soft (like just-had-a-facial-soft), for the whole day,” she added. “I wouldn’t recommend it for someone living in a more humid or dewy climate, but for an East Coast winter — it’s an absolute everyday essential.”

This serum is formulated with three essential ceramides, which help to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier, ensuring that moisture stays locked in for longer periods; this helps to reduce moisture loss and prevent external irritants from penetrating the skin. It’s noncomedogenic, fragrance-free and dermatologist-tested, making it a soothing refresher before bedtime, though you can also use it in the morning.

The serum is also non-greasy and lightweight, allowing it to layer easily under other treatments without feeling heavy or sticky. Whether you’re looking for a boost of hydration or seeking to improve the overall appearance and texture of your skin, it’s a great option for balancing hydration levels.

Size: 1 ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Ceramides, Glycerin | Pairs well with: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Hyaluronic Acid & Ceramides ($19)

Best Moisturizer: COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream

While I’m beyond obsessed with the COSRX Snail Mucin 96% Power Repairing Essence ($20), it can’t steal all of the spotlight. That’s where the brand’s equally as good Hyaluronic Acid Intensive Cream comes in. It’s a rich, deeply hydrating moisturizer formulated with a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, attracting moisture to keep skin plump, smooth and hydrated.

While it has a bit of a goopy consistency, it helps auto-correct your skin if it looks lackluster. I find that it’s perfect for my dehydrated skin, with the cream’s thick, luscious texture absorbing quickly without feeling heavy or greasy. I love using it in the mornings and evenings (following my Snail Mucin, of course).

Because it includes glycerin and niacinamide in addition to hyaluronic acid, its formulation further enhances the cream’s ability to hydrate and brighten the skin. The result? A radiant, refreshed appearance.

If the trifecta of ingredients wasn’t enough, the COSRX cream also contains panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), which has soothing properties and improves the overall skin texture, making it feel soft and nourished. Without fail, I consistently reach toward this light-as-air, whipped texture to layer over my serums — and it doesn’t pill!

If your skin runs sensitive, this hydrant is still for you. It’s void of parabens, sulfates and artificial fragrances and works well alongside other skincare products. Despite its rich texture, the cream doesn’t feel overly thick, which has benefits for combination skin, too. When used consistently, I noticed it offers my skin a pleasing, dewy glow.

Size: 3.52 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, Gylcerin, Vitamin B5 | Pairs well with: COSRX Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Power Essence Hyaluronic Acid Toner ($17)

Best Splurge Moisturizer: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

After reviewing all of Charlotte Tilbury, its Magic Cream is one to rave about. First off, this hyaluronic acid cream is supremely luxurious with a melt-in-your-fingers consistency that leads to a soothing, smooth glow. It’s infused with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and peptides to deliver moisture deep into the skin, helping to reduce dryness each time I use it.

What sets Magic Cream apart from other moisturizers is its multitasking ability. Not only does it hydrate, but it also provides a radiant glow. On a scientific level, the formula contains light-reflecting particles that help create a soft, dewy finish, making it perfect for those who want a luminous complexion without the need for additional highlighters or makeup. While I don’t struggle with fine lines, the cream’s ability to smooth out any natural* imperfections* and create a glowing base has made it one I reach to routinely (following my hyaluronic acid serum, of course).

Though not 100% fragrance-free, it doesn’t irritate my skin and has an almost thin texture. As a result, I’m left with buildable coverage to spot-treat any dry spots in addition to smoothing out a clean layer all over my face. It’s a splurge but its tub is sure to last a while — and do your skin some good all the while.

Size: 1.01 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Vitamins C and E, Peptides | Pairs well with: Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte’s Magic Serum Crystal Elixir ($85)

Best for Fine Lines: L’Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Hyaluronic Plumping Serum

The L’Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.5% Hyaluronic Plumping Serum hails from a heritage brand in the beauty industry that’s keen on addressing fine lines due to its high concentration of 1.5% hyaluronic acid. As the skin becomes more hydrated, fine lines appear less noticeable because they are less likely to become accentuated by dehydration. This leaves your complexion looking smoother and more youthful.

The serum contains other beneficial ingredients like Pro-Retinol (a derivative of vitamin A) and vitamin C, which are known to promote skin renewal and boost collagen production. This combination of ingredients works synergistically to target the signs of aging, including fine lines and wrinkles. Jacqueline Goldstein, VP of commerce, has been enjoying the product for targeting fine lines.

“The L’Oreal Paris Revitalift 1.% Hyaluronic Plumping Serum has a lot of good things going for it: it’s fairly low cost, scentless, uses very straightforward packaging and delivers the product in a dropper, and it’s accessibly sold at major retailers like Amazon and Walmart,” Goldstein noted. “I also recently learned Eva Longoria is a fan. After about two months using it, during the winter I might add, my face is hydrated and happy while the rest of my skin gasps for moisture… I will have to address elsewhere.”

If you have very sensitive skin, you might want to consider another product though, as there was a slight tingle upon application, according to Goldstein.

What’s more, the lightweight yet effective formula of this serum provides both immediate and long-term improvements in skin appearance, making it a must-buy for anyone with anti-aging concerns.

Size: 1.7 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Pro-Retinol, Vitamin C | Pairs well with: L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Anti-Aging Moisturizer ($31)

Best Splurge: SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier Multi-Glycan

If you’re *really* serious about your hyaluronic acid usage, then the SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier Multi-Glycan serum is worth the extra coin, namely because its advanced formulation goes beyond basic hydration.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid serums, this product features a potent blend of three different glycans, which are naturally occurring molecules that support the skin’s structural integrity and moisture balance. By combining these glycan compounds with 1.3% hyaluronic acid, the serum amplifies the skin’s ability to retain moisture and strengthens the skin’s barrier; this results in a plumping effect that visibly smooths fine lines and promotes a more youthful, radiant complexion.

In that regard, the multi-faceted approach to hydration and skin health makes it an investment for anyone serious about anti-aging skincare. The standout feature? Its ability to target multiple layers of the skin for deeper, long-lasting hydration. The coupling of hyaluronic acid with proven technology like glycan helps improve the skin’s moisture content not only on the surface but also in the deeper layers where hydration is often most needed. This makes it particularly beneficial for individuals with dry, dehydrated or aging skin.

“SkinCeuticals is revered by anyone who knows a thing about medical-grade skincare,” Coley said. “I’ve used HA products before but nothing as high-end. I love how silky the texture of this one is and how gentle.” She didn’t notice a huge difference, which was sort of a disappointment for the price tag. However, Coley’s skin was a bit brighter and her texture was slightly better.

While hyaluronic acid is still the superstar ingredient of this serum, it has other skincare technology (such as probiotics) to improve texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

This remarkable, clinical-grade skincare product is also free from fragrances, parabens and dyes, making it suitable for sensitive skin types as well. The high-quality ingredients and attention to detail in the formulation ensure that you’re not just paying for the brand name, but for a product that can provide real, visible benefits.

Size: 1 fluid ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, 10% proxylane solution (to help support skin firmness), 0.2% purple rice extract (known for their antioxidant properties) | Pairs well with: SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight Dry Moisturizer ($78)

Best for Hyperpigmentation: The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA Hyperpigmentation Serum

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA Hyperpigmentation Serum is a powerful yet affordable treatment for hyperpigmentation, primarily due to its high concentration of alpha arbutin. Alpha arbutin is a potent yet gentle brightening agent that works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the production of melanin in the skin. By reducing melanin synthesis, alpha arbutin helps to fade dark spots, sun spots and hyperpigmentation more effectively than many other brightening ingredients, without causing irritation or sensitivity.

Additionally, the 2% concentration in this serum is enough to show visible improvements in skin tone, making it a go-to option for anyone struggling with uneven pigmentation or discoloration. And, let’s not forget, hyaluronic acid further enhances its efficacy by providing hydration and improving the skin’s moisture barrier.

“Wow” is the single word Michelle Moezam, senior commerce social media manager, used to describe this product once she used it on her skin. “My mom audibly gasped on FaceTime with me and said, ‘you’re glowing!‘ after I had been using this serum twice daily and consistently for 2 weeks,” Moezam said. “I struggle with hyperpigmentation and this has helped lift darkness from any post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation I may get from an older deflated hormonal pimple.”

She said you can sense skin sensitivity a little bit when using this, so hydration layered on top (like one of the best night creams we reviewed) is key, as well as a daily SPF. “I would caution using this alongside any other highly active serums; it may make your face feel hot and overwhelm the skin,” she noted.

For its thoughtfully curated ingredient list, it’s a product suitable for those with dry or dehydrated skin, which can often exacerbate the appearance of hyperpigmentation. The combination of brightening and hydrating properties makes this serum ideal for treating hyperpigmentation while ensuring that the skin remains healthy and balanced throughout the process.

Unlike some hyperpigmentation treatments that can feel heavy or greasy on the skin, this serum absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. This makes it easy to layer with other products, such as moisturizers or sunscreen, without feeling uncomfortable. The serum is also well-suited for use in both morning and nighttime skincare routines. Consistent application over several weeks is thought to lead to visible improvements in skin tone, clarity, and a reduction in the appearance of dark spots.

Size: 1.01 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Alpha arbutin | Pairs well with: The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA ($14)

Best Makeup Primer: MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip Primer

When makeup brands include hyaluronic acid in an ingredient list, you know you’ll receive an extra dose of hydration. Luckily, that’s exactly what’s inside the MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip Primer.

Much like your go-to hyaluronic acid serum, this primer doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. Rather, it securely grips onto makeup following it, preventing smudging or fading even in humid conditions. For that reason, it’s incredibly revered in the beauty community — and one of the most refreshing ones we often turn to.

“I have sensitive, dry skin, so I typically use a thick moisturizer as a primer before my makeup,” Brooke Matalon, Page Six social media editor, shared, along with her experience of testing the product. “Because of that, I was skeptical about trying this, but I was really impressed by how hydrating yet tacky it is. The gel-like formula really kept my foundation securely in place all day.”

The primer dries down to a slightly tacky finish, which enhances the adherence of foundation, concealer and other makeup products. In addition to hyaluronic acid, it includes aloe water to soothe the skin and create a plump, healthy look at the same time. This dual-action approach makes it ideal for those who (1) want skincare-esque hydration and (2) makeup longevity.

Not only that, this hyaluronic acid-infused primer is also clean, vegan and cruelty-free, making it a top-tier sustainable buy. It also includes niacinamide and hemp-derived cannabis-seed extract (to help lock in moisture), in addition to blue agave extract that grips makeup to prevent melting, fading and caking.

Its green-tinted gel blends transparently into the skin as well, giving it a universally flattering look on all skin tones.

Size: 1.52 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Aloe water, Hemp-derived cannabis-seed extract (to help lock in moisture) | Pairs well with: MILK MAKEUP KUSH Sheer Hydrating Lip Oil ($26)

Best Makeup Setting Spray: MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip Set + Refresh Spray

The MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip Set + Refresh Spray is a well-formulated setting spray that offers both long-lasting and hydrating benefits. The reason? It includes both hyaluronic acid and niacinamide — the combo made in heaven — to help maintain moisture balance while locking in makeup at the same time.

One of the standout features of the Hydro Grip Spray is its ability to create a smooth, dewy finish without the greasy feeling that some setting sprays leave behind. The unique formula is designed to grip makeup, providing long-lasting hold even under high humidity or after hours of wear. Its lightweight, non-aerosol mist offers an even and fine spray, allowing for a refreshed look without disrupting the makeup you’ve carefully applied. This makes it perfect for quick touch-ups or setting makeup in place after a full application.

“This is such a great setting spray that really brings your makeup look together,” Matalon shared. “It’s dewy without making you look shiny, and it works to keep your makeup in place. I have drier skin, and I found it to be super hydrating.”

Another key benefit of this clear hyaluronic acid setting spray is its versatility. Not only does it set makeup, but it can also be used throughout the day to revitalize the skin and give it a refreshed, hydrated glow. Whether you’re transitioning from day to night or simply need a midday boost, this spray works wonders in reinvigorating your complexion.

And, like the brand’s Hydro Grip Primer, it contains blue agave extract to set makeup to prevent melting, fading and creasing.

Size: 3.38 ounces | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, Blue agave extract | Pairs well with: MILK MAKEUP KUSH Sheer Hydrating Lip Oil ($26)

Best for Texture: The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Serum

The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Serum is a standout product for improving skin texture due to its deeply hydrating and plumping properties. Its pure hyaluronic acid content provides intense hydration and helps to soften the skin’s surface, reducing the appearance of dryness, flakiness, and other textural issues. Not to mention, when the skin is adequately hydrated, it naturally appears plumper and more even, which can lead to a smoother overall texture.

Another reason the serum is great for texture is its lightweight, fast-absorbing formula. Unlike some heavier moisturizers or oils, The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Serum doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue, making it suitable for all skin types, including oily or acne-prone skin. It absorbs quickly into the skin, allowing for immediate hydration without disrupting the skin’s natural barrier or contributing to breakouts. By delivering moisture deep into the skin without clogging pores, the serum helps to balance out texture irregularities caused by dehydration, oil buildup or acne scars.

“As someone who firmly believes good skincare — especially the basics — shouldn’t break the bank, I was really excited to try The Inkey List’s much-hyped hyaluronic acid serum — and I wasn’t disappointed!” Elana Fishman, Page Six Style and shopping director, said. “My skin’s always dry, but it gets particularly parched during the winter and this added a nice boost of hydration when layered beneath my usual moisturizer.”

It didn’t feel sticky on her skin, either (a common complaint with hyaluronic acid serums) and seemed to absorb nicely, leaving her complexion looking and feeling plump and nourished. “I haven’t noticed any breakouts or irritation after about a month of testing it, either, and my skin’s fairly sensitive,” Fishman added. “Do be careful when dispensing it; you only need a few drops to get the job done, and the packaging makes it easy to pour out too much at once. But again, at $10 a bottle, it’s not the end of the world if you go through it quickly!”

Additionally, the INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid Serum works synergistically with other skincare products to improve overall skin texture. When used as part of a consistent skincare routine, it enhances the effectiveness of exfoliating acids or treatments that target uneven skin tone or surface texture. The serum’s ability to keep skin hydrated creates an optimal environment for these active ingredients to work more effectively, leading to smoother, more refined skin over time.

To add the cherry on top of the skincare sundae, this serum contains a multi-molecular form of hyaluronic acid which penetrates deeply into the skin’s surface to provide additional nourishment. The serum is also vegan, cruelty-free and fragrance-free — a checkmark in its favor for the most sensitive skin types.

Whether you’re dealing with fine lines, dry patches or acne scars, this serum provides the hydration necessary to support skin’s natural renewal process. The end result? A visibly smoother, more even complexion when consistently used.

Size: 1.0 ounce | Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin | Pairs well with: The INKEY List Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturizer ($20)

Best Cream Face Mask: DRMTLGY Barrier Repair Mask

The DRMTLGY Barrier Repair Mask is a standout product because it is specifically designed to strengthen and restore the skin’s natural barrier. It contains the nourishing-ingredient trifecta — ceramides, peptides and hyaluronic acid — all of which work together to support the skin’s moisture retention and repair damaged or compromised skin. Combined, these ingredients help replenish lipids, improve hydration and enhance the skin’s ability to protect itself from external stressors like pollution, weather changes and harsh skincare products.

By focusing on barrier repair, this mask is ideal for those with dry, sensitive or irritated skin, or anyone dealing with the aftermath of over-exfoliation or environmental damage. It also provides instant relief and long-term benefits. Upon application, the mask has a soothing and cooling effect, which helps calm inflammation and redness, magically. The rich, creamy texture deeply moisturizes, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth, without being heavy or greasy. Over time, regular use of the mask strengthens the skin’s protective barrier, leading to more resilient skin that is better equipped to handle dryness, sensitivities and external aggressors.

“As a dry-skinned girlie, I absolutely love the DRMTLGY Barrier Repair Facial Mask for its ultra-rich, hydrating formula, which leaves my skin feeling silky smooth and deeply nourished overnight (literally),” Cornish shared. “I find this mask to be a game-changer when it comes to effectively repairing my skin barrier through the winter and reducing redness without any added irritation.”

Additionally, it’s a great treatment for restoring balance to the skin, leaving it looking healthier and more radiant. What sets the DRMTLGY Barrier Repair Mask apart from other face masks is its clean and effective formulation as well. It’s void of parabens, sulfates and fragrances and designed to be gentle on the skin, even for those with the most sensitive or reactive skin types. The mask is also suitable for all skin types, from dry and mature skin to oily and acne-prone skin, as it hydrates without clogging pores. It’s a luscious, practical solution to implement into your skincare regimen at least once a week.

An FAQ on Hyaluronic Acid

Consider this your skincare masterclass. Below, find the 411 on hyaluronic acid: what it is, how to use it and best practices for integrating the ingredient into your skincare routine.

What is hyaluronic acid? What does hyaluronic acid do?

“Hyaluronic acid (H.A.) is a polysaccharide (sugar string) substance found naturally in human skin, eyes, and joints, which acts as a natural lubricant, volume support and moisturizer,” Jessica Krant, MD, MPH, a board-certified dermatologist at NYC’s Laser & Skin Surgery Center told the New York Post. “It’s the material that surrounds and supports collagen in our skin.”

What’s more, it’s a staple ingredient for hydration due to its properties. “The key benefit of hyaluronic acid is its ability to bind water,” Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, a dual board-certified dermatologist and founder of NYC’s Mudgil Dermatology PC, told The Post. “It can bind 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an ideal moisturizer.”

What are the benefits of using hyaluronic acid?

As mentioned above, there are plenty of hyaluronic acid benefits, as the ingredient, when incorporated, makes for an incredible moisturizer and serum for rejuvenated skin. “In topical products, it also helps make the skin surface more ‘translucent’ to other products, helping them penetrate more effectively through the skin surface barrier,” Dr. Krant adds.

It can also act as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air and holding it against the skin.

How should I start incorporating hyaluronic acid into my skincare routine?

Ahead, our dermatologist experts share the 411 on how to use hyaluronic acid.

According to Dr. Mudgil, a topical preparation can be used daily to multiple times per day depending on one’s skin type.” Those with dry skin can use H.A. products more frequently without issue, too.”

Because it’s a natural substance, it’s also well-tolerated by just about everyone. “There’s really no skin type that can’t use it,” Dr. Nazarian noted. “Even super sensitive skin can use this ingredient safely and can use it daily, even several times a day. It can be used around the eyes and shows improvement within minutes —  super quickly. Ideally, it’s used with an emollient or something to seal the skin barrier to enhance its effects; humectant plus emollient is the perfect combo.”

Nazarian loves it best for dry skin and acne-prone skin, especially when paired with an emollient. “People with early signs of aging, like fine lines, can also benefit from using hyaluronic acid because it can minimize those lines very nicely, even within a few hours,” she highlighted. “Additionally, I like suggesting hyaluronic acid for people that are on a skincare regimen that may be somewhat irritating (such as acne regimens).”

What not to mix with hyaluronic acid

“It’s absolutely okay to combine hyaluronic acid with retinol, vitamin C or niacinamide; it’s a perfect complement to these ingredients,” Nazarian said. “It does not work to treat acne as a monotherapy, and I would never recommend it as such. On the flip side, it doesn’t clog pores or cause acne, so it’s perfectly safe to use for acne-prone skin.”

What percentage of hyaluronic acid works best?

The percentage of hyaluronic acid to use largely depends on your skin type and tolerability. For instance, if you have more sensitive skin, you’ll want to use a lower percentage, like 0.5%. However, if you’re not a newbie to hyaluronic acid or find your skin to be a veteran of many serums, you can use between 1% to 2%.

Low-molecular-weight, high-molecular-weight and multi-molecular weight, explained

When researching hyaluronic acid skincare products before testing, we noticed that some brands highlighted if a formulation was a low-molecular-weight, high-molecular-weight or multi-molecular.

“Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our tissue, mostly in a high molecular weight form, although it does get broken down and is found as a low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid as well,” Nazarian explained. “The different weights may signal different cellular responses in the skin, triggering different pathways of healing and repair mechanisms, but they also have varying levels of penetration into the skin, meaning, you find different types in different areas and levels of the skin and body.”

So, the thought is that perhaps using a combination of molecular weights will trigger different complementary pathways and will lead to even better results than just high molecular weight alone. Generally, a low-molecular weight can penetrate deeper into the skin, but may also be more irritating. Higher-molecular weight stays on the surface for hydration.

“Plus, we know that the larger the size, the harder it is to penetrate into the skin, and we also know that too small may actually have harmful effects on the tissue. So it’s alllll about balance,” she commented.

Somewhat surprisingly, companies are not really stating what level of molecular weight they’re using in their products. But, Nazarian (and The Post Shopping team) thinks this is a trend that we should be looking for in the future.

What is the best hyaluronic acid serum?

Based on our testing, the most effective hyaluronic acid serum is the Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum for its ability to douse the skin in hydration and alleviate dry, flaky skin.

We also recommend The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum if you’re on a budget, and the SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier Multi-Glycan if you’re willing to splurge a bit more.

How We Tested

The Post Wanted team spent at least 8 weeks total testing the best-in-class hyaluronic acid serums and formulations. Some of us have been using the ingredient for more than five years, too. Here’s a breakdown of what we tested for:

• Patch Test: As a rule of thumb, we always do a patch test to check for any allergic reactions or irritation, especially for sensitive skin.
• Skin Feel: Is the serum gentle and soothing, or does it cause any stinging, redness or tightness upon application or after extended use?
• Acne or Breakouts: Did the serum cause clogged pores or breakouts over time? Hyaluronic acid is generally noncomedogenic, but other ingredients in the serum could potentially cause issues.
• Consistency: Did the serum have a thin, watery texture or is it slightly thicker? Both can work well, but thinner serums tend to absorb faster.
• Absorption Rate: How quickly did the serum absorb into the skin? Did it leave a tacky or sticky residue, or did it sink in without a trace?
• Spreadability: How easily did the serum spread on the skin? A serum that requires more effort to spread could indicate it has a thicker or more concentrated formula.
• Stickiness: How did the skin feel after application? Did it feel soft, hydrated or smooth without being greasy?
• Plumping and Firming: How well did the serum plump the skin, especially around fine lines and wrinkles? Was there a visible improvement in skin elasticity or smoothness after consistent use?
• Brightness and Radiance: Did the serum make our skin look more radiant and healthy, or did it feel dull over time?
• Lines and Wrinkles: Did the serum help in visibly reducing fine lines or the appearance of crow’s feet, if applicable, by plumping the skin?
• Immediate Hydration: We assessed how well the serum hydrated the skin upon initial application. Did it feel instantly plump, smooth and hydrated?
• Long-term Hydration: We tested if the serum continued to hydrate and lock in moisture after several hours, or if our skin felt dry again.
• Layering Ability: How well did the serum or formulation work when layered with other skincare products (for instance, moisturizers, sunscreens or treatments?) Did the serum create a smooth base for makeup, or did it pill or disrupt other products on our skin?
• Sustainability: Is the serum cruelty-free or vegan? Does the brand use ethical practices in its manufacturing process?
