With the WNBA offseason in full swing, the name most discussed among Fever fans lately has been Sophie Cunningham. After a breakout 2023 season that set new franchise records for wins, Cunningham finds herself on the open market with significant intrigue.
Looking back on Indiana Fever’s historic season: The Fever had a great streak and ended the season at 28-16. Looking back on a memorable playoff loss in the first round to Las Vegas Aces, Cunningham talked about the team’s chemistry and work ethic during an episode of her No Hesitation podcast.
“We were so good, and it was so much fun,” Cunningham said on the podcast. “The squad really loved each other. … We do have a lot to be proud about. It stinks because we’re all just so competitive and we just want a championship at the end of it.”
Addressing Free Agency Rumors and Criticisms
As her contract wound down, Cunningham received plenty of feedback from sports commentators about whether the Fever should re-sign her or go elsewhere.
Cunningham had never been one to hold her tongue, and she responded to outside opinions about her on her podcast, sticking up for herself and saying that she was a fighter.
“I have no idea what’s next,” Cunningham said when asked about her upcoming free agency. “I think a lot of us are on free agency right now, so who knows? I think when we get a little bit older and we think back on this season we’re going to be extremely proud of what we were able to do the months of July and August.
What Lies Ahead?
With the WNBA free-agency negotiating period beginning soon, the Indiana Fever front office has some significant roster decisions to make. Whether Cunningham comes back to Indiana as a veteran presence and intense competitor in hopes of another run or experiences the great escape to a different franchise, it is all to be determined.
