The General Court Martial in Makindye was thrown into fresh uncertainty on Monday after two former security informers, who had earlier pleaded guilty to charges arising from alleged fake bomb plots at Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine and Kalerwe Market, asked to withdraw their guilty pleas.
Hamza Lyavaala and Adil Walusansa last week pleaded guilty to two counts of murder linked to the alleged bomb plots in Munyonyo and Kalerwe.
The alleged operations were planned ahead of the June 3, 2025, Martyrs Day celebrations, according to the prosecution.
However, when the case came up for sentencing on Monday, the two accused persons informed the military court that they had changed their minds and wanted to reverse their earlier pleas.
“Following guidance from my lawyer, I am humbly asking court to allow me to change my plea,” Lyavaala told the court.
His co-accused, Walusansa, also asked the court for permission to change his plea.
The requests halted the anticipated sentencing, with the court indicating that it would first have to determine whether the accused persons could withdraw their guilty pleas.
The General Court Martial chairman, Brig. Richard Tukacungurwa, adjourned the proceedings to allow the court to consider the matter.
“For that matter, we are not ready to deliver sentence. It will come on October 29, so we can deliver a ruling on that matter,” Brig. Tukacungurwa said.
