PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Sports) - When Notre Dame's final pass fell incomplete and the fans stormed the field at LaVell Edwards Stadium, the BYU team knew it had accomplished something historic.
"It was surreal for sure," said tight end Walker Lyons, who caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Cougars' 28-24 win. "All weekend, from the time the game was over to celebrating with my teammates, it was just surreal. I'm just happy to be a part of this team."
"Going into the game with College GameDay, I thought it was really cool," added freshman wide receiver Legend Glasker. "Just the hype leading up to it, those are the games I live for. I can't wait to go out there and shine. I'm super blessed to be a part of that."
As far as the Big 12 acknowledging there should have been one second left on the game clock, giving Notre Dame one last opportunity to win the game, it's a moot point now.
"Yeah I heard about it later on about the release the Big 12 made and all that," said BYU head coach Kalani Sitake. "From what I saw, the play was over four seconds. I think everybody assumed that that was going to be the final play of the game."
And it was. But BYU knows the season is still just half over. If they want to solidify a spot in the College Football Playoffs for the first time, they can't get caught up in this one victory, as big as it was.
"We're exactly where we know we should be," said Glasker. "We're happy where we're at, but we know there's so much more we need to do. I mean, beating Notre Dame was great, but that's not what the season was about."
"That was a big win and a lot of emotions," said safety Faletau Satuala. "I feel like having that that day off yesterday, just to calm down and just being ready for this week, I think there's a lot more to come in the season."
Being ranked #2 in the nation, BYU's highest ranking since the Cougars won the national title in 1984, is definitely fun for BYU fans to enjoy. But Sitake couldn't care less about mid-season rankings.
"I never cared about it before, so why would I start now?" Sitake said. "You guys like it, so I'll let you guys handle that stuff. Just keep the rat poison away from the boys."
"I was just saying, we're the number two team in the whole country," Glasker said. "We're blessed to be there and we're all happy about it. But, our team knows we got way more work to do."
"Obviously, it kind of helps put BYU on the map," Satuala said. "But, there's still a lot more to go in the season. Being ranked number two, we've seen the past couple of weeks that you could drop pretty quickly just with one loss."
"We're in a spot that we thought we were going to be," Lyons said. "We're grateful to be here. But there's also a lot of football left and and we know that."
BYU now has regroup, move past its first win over a top-2 team since 1990, and make a cross-country trip to Orlando to take on a rested UCF team.
"The win was great," Glasker said. "But I feel like our team knows coming into Monday, it's a new business week. Our team going into the weight room today and just our practice throughout this week is going to be just be about beating UCF.
BYU (6-0) and UCF (3-3) kick off at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Orlando.
