Kohima,Oct 17: The National People’s Party (NPP) has demanded a comprehensive, transparent and time-bound investigation into suspected adulterated liquor-related deaths in Nagaland, after three more fatalities at Longphayimsen village under Longtho Police Station took the reported death toll to 23.The victims include people from neighbouring Assam.
In a press statement issued on October 17, NPP National Vice-President Vevoyi Wideo D. Vadeo expressed grave concern over the recurring fatalities and criticised the state’s enforcement machinery. He said the deaths pointed to serious gaps in enforcement and the widespread availability of illicit liquor, particularly in border areas.
“In a dry state, how is poisonous liquor being manufactured, transported and sold so openly?” the party questioned, alleging the presence of a deep-rooted and organised illicit liquor network.
The NPP acknowledged that forensic confirmation of the exact cause of death was still pending but said the reported 23 fatalities could not be dismissed as a consequence of alcohol consumption alone. It described the situation as a failure of the state to enforce its own policies.
“This is not the time to debate morality. This is about the Government’s constitutional duty to protect the right to life of its citizens. When a ban exists, it is the Government’s duty to enforce it,” Vadeo said.
The party urged the Nagaland government to order a thorough and time-bound investigation into the recent deaths and previous related incidents to identify and dismantle organised illicit liquor networks.
It also called for stronger coordination between the Nagaland and Assam police to trace the sources, suppliers and distribution channels operating along the inter-state border.
The NPP further demanded legal action against those found responsible, based on forensic evidence and investigative findings. It urged the government to provide relief and assistance to the bereaved families and intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of consuming alcohol from unverified sources.
The party said the recurring fatalities warranted an objective review of public health safeguards, enforcement mechanisms and the effectiveness of existing regulatory arrangements in Nagaland.
Calling for urgent administrative action beyond political considerations, the NPP urged the state government to take steps to prevent further loss of life.
