The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is investigating alleged irregularities, embezzlement of public funds and money laundering in the repair and renovation of the sound system in the parliament building's plenary hall, where Tk9 crore was allocated and around Tk5 crore spent.
ACC Director General Mohammad Nazmul Hasan disclosed the information to journalists this afternoon (15 October).
He said the investigation involves Zahidur Rahim Zowarder, chief executive officer of Communication Technology Ltd, and other people concerned.
The commission launched the investigation on 9 April into alleged irregularities in the sound system project and allegations of money laundering against Zowarder.
Installation of the sound system in the plenary hall began in 2018, but it malfunctioned several times during parliamentary sessions.
The system was damaged when protesters entered the parliament building on 5 August 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government. It was later repaired and renovated by the same contractor during the interim government's tenure.
Communication Technology Ltd installed the system under the supervision of Md Ashraful Haque, the then executive engineer (E/M) at the Public Works Department's Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office, during the Awami League government. The same company was later awarded the repair and renovation work.
The ACC suspects that funds may have been embezzled through collusion between the officials concerned and the contractor. Investigators are also examining whether part of the allegedly misappropriated money was transferred abroad.
Hasan said the commission was separately investigating allegations that Zowarder embezzled hundreds of crores of taka in medical equipment procurement in the health sector and laundered money abroad by inflating prices.
The ACC has not reached any final conclusions on the allegations, as the investigations are ongoing.
